While he was playing a science officer on TV, my dad was an actual space physicist with a sizable lab of technicians and graduate students at the University of California. He was part of an international community of physicists from Russia, Italy, UK, Germany and Sweden. He launched at least a dozen spacecraft over a forty year period. The spacecraft all contained state-of-the-art photometers or radiation detectors transmitting data back to earth.
