I've lived in California three times and always thought of it as a magical place. Of course, I grew up right outside of Newark NJ, so it's not only the mild winters that I loved about southern CA. I can still remember the first time, Neil Young was singing Cowgirl in the Sand and I was looking for her on the beaches of Capistrano and Laguna.
