Texas Judge Goes to Jail for Illegally Selling Guns

Former judge, Tim Wright apologizing for being a dirtbag

Daily Kos

It's hard to be from Texas and figure out a way to violate a gun law. That's because they have so few gun laws! But a former Texas county judge was just sentenced last week to 18 months in a federal prison for being an arms dealer.

Tim Wright, 70, had entered a plea bargain with prosecutors earlier this year and will be placed on supervised release for three years once he completes his prison sentence, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas said.
Wright was facing a lot more time as his crimes were pretty bad.
Prosecutors say Wright sold guns to a known felon, traded dozens of firearms without a license and lied to federal agents in 2014. Daniel Jones with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms said Sparks sent a message that no one is above the law. “It does not matter if you are a judge, a doctor, a lawyer, or a dirtbag, you do something wrong and we will investigate you,” said Jones.

  1. The author should re-read his first paragraph slowly if he's confused about how someone could get in trouble for violating federal gun laws in the state of Texas.

  2. Of course Texas laws are immaterial in this case because the judge was violating federal firearms laws, hence the conviction in federal court and a vacation in a federal prison.

A former Texas county judge was sentenced on Friday to 18 months in a federal prison for illegally dealing in firearms and making false statements to government agents about the weapons, some of which were smuggled into Mexico, prosecutors said.

Tim Wright, 70, had entered a plea bargain with prosecutors earlier this year and will be placed on supervised release for three years once he completes his prison sentence, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas said.

From June 2014, Wright sold more than 60 firearms without a federal firearms license. Dozens of the weapons were sold to two people who were illegally smuggling those guns into Mexico, the office said.

There's the small matter of that pipeline of American guns entering Mexico that you guys conveniently overlook that Mike has been so on about all these years. It's such an old issue, it seems like it's been going on for more than twenty years.

Don't you think it would be wise for the U.S. to try to do something to stop this flow of arms? Or do we just throw up our hands and chalk it up to the cost of freedom?

    1. Doing things that can work to stop anything and anybody from crossing the border either way doesnt seem to be in the interest of our government. Ask them why and get back to us with that answer.

    2. If you ask Mr. Sutherland here, I would think he would say the US government is doing something about it, to his lament.

    3. I think he might be responsible for 90% of the gun traffic going into Mexico.

    4. I sincerely hope you're joshing about the 90% number. He was only responsible for dozens of firearms, while the current administration is responsible for about 2,000 firearms heading south over a period of about three years.

    6. According to SS since his crime was less than Obama's crime, of course he's not a law breaker and what he did was fine. Dishonest, kill crazy, gun loon thinking. Supporting more criminals I see SS.

    7. The only difference between the two was of degree Anon. And one was prosecuted, and one not.

    8. The only difference SS is you defended the law breaker, but condemn the president, who broke no law. Quite a difference, except for a lying gun loon like you.

    9. I don't recall defending the former judge Anon. I believe I condemned both actions.

    10. Lie again SS? I suppose you are now going to deny you supported the military man who broke the gun rules. You are funny, your lies are so obvious.

    Howdy FJ
Hope things are well with you. In regards to this man's crimes, it doesn't matter if the guns were being sold to Mexican gun smugglers of the local police department. He didn't go through the paperwork, that I imagine he could have easily qualified for an FFL.
It's likely been going on longer than that, though I don't know how long Mexico's repressive gun laws have been in place. My only complaint regarding guns being smuggled south is that they are likely going to the drug cartels who wield great power in the country, and not to the citizens, who could make use of them for self defense.
Last I heard, citizen groups dubbed vigilantes have made a name for themselves battling the cartels where government couldn't or wouldn't. I wonder what will happen when the government demands the guns back that the citizen groups took from the cartel and used against them.

    1. That's right, Mexico is run by drug cartels and kills indiscriminately with their guns. Yet you claim Mexico IS a developed nation, not a third world nation. Thanks for proving yourself wrong.

    2. Anon, Mexico is a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) who's countries are often used to compare against the U.S. In regards to gun laws and violence. They are considered to be "developed" countries. They just always leave out the member country which doesn't have stats that help their assertion. A lot like DC gets left out of such discussions in the U.S.

    3. Fine SS, you continue to believe that a country run by drug lords is a developed nation. HA HA HA HA HA HA

    4. Anon, do you feel constipated? You should considering just how far and how long you have had your head up your ass.

Seriously, if brains were dynamite you couldnt even blow your own nose. Get out of your moms basement, put on some pants and get a life. Learn something. You need to go to school. Not go back to school because I dont believe you have ever been.

    11. So you admit to being more than one? Just how many are you? Three? Five? Are you SS as well? Maybe your Mike? Laci? Doggone?

      How many are you?

    12. Thanks for making my point and proving me correct.

    13. What point? And correct about what? That you have a multiple personality disorder?

How many personalities do you have? How many are pro gun and many are anti? How many have names and how many are just anons.

And you have to know this, all of "you", no one else proves your "points" unless its just one of your internal conflicting personalities that only knows what "point" that one of you are talking about. Out here, the rest of us can only guess.

Good luck, to all of you. Who ever you are.

  6. Just stirring the pot a little bit, friends. Thank you for the responses.

    ssg,

Hope all is well with your clan. August is vacation month out west. Went boogie-boarding with the grandkids on my Birthday. Mrs. Junior and I attended the musical event of the entire season, The Buena Vista Social Club Farewell Tour. Next Saturday I hope to walk to Black's Beach from the Scripps Pier at low tide for some serious body surfing! Summer is not over yet, as there are still yellow rose buds in the garden. Grew some big, fat beefsteak tomatoes this year. Yummy.
