Walmart Quits Selling AR-15s

Huffington Post

Walmart says it will stop selling AR-15s and other sporting rifles, a spokesman confirmed to The Huffington Post on Wednesday.

The chain won't stock modern sports rifles such as the AR-15, nor semi-automatic shotguns. The price of remaining inventory will be reduced, Walmart rep Kory Lundberg told HuffPost. BearingArms.com first reported the change Tuesday.

The company will continue to sell shotguns and other “hunting weapons,” Lundberg said. "We're focusing on firearms more associated with hunters and sportsmen."

Though the retail giant said the move was simply a reflection of changing customer tastes, it comes at a time when Walmart has been moving to a kinder, gentler image under new CEO Doug McMillon. The chain is under pressure as the minimum wage movement gains steam and the economy picks up.

This new move is a sign of a more empathetic Walmart, said Bill George, the former Medtronic CEO who writes often about leadership. "This comes as a big surprise, given Walmart’s market. Good for them," he said in an email to The Huffington Post.

  1. I can understand having to cut items that don't sell well with them. I bought the shotgun my son uses in his high school trap league from Walmart. They have a really nice computerized form 4473 which speeds things along pretty well.

    1. WTF has that got to do with the point of the article? NOTHING, but it's OK for you to go off topic, just no one else. Typical gun loon hypocrisy.

Which gun owners are claiming "persecution" here? If you find one, I'll enthusiastically join you in laughing at him/her.

    1. Many are and you know it - in fact you'd join your vioce to theirs in lamenting the decision of Wlmart. But not if it means missing a chance to argue with me, right Kurt?

    2. Many are . . .

Which should mean you'll have no trouble coming up with an example. Just one. But no moving the goal posts, as you seem already to be trying to do, now that you've gone from talking about "persecution," to "lamenting."

People lament lots of things without claiming to be "persecuted" by those things. I think Wal-Mart's abandonment of the regime change rifle market is political cowardice, and that the claim that the decision is not politically motivated is a transparent lie. I don't claim that they don't have every right to stop selling whatever they choose, or that the choice "persecutes" anyone.

So my question, again, is, can you name one person who does make such a claim?

    3. Really Mike? Persecuted? How?!?

Walmart makes a financially sound decision to quit selling an item because many other stores and mom and pop shops can sell the same item for less. Walmart cant put all of their competition out of business, as that is the way they grow their stores, eliminate the competition.

So now the anti-gun types are claiming a false victory? I guess you better take what you can get as your victories are getting smaller and fewer. Real or not.

    5. Certainly not a victim here Mike. Minnesota has a secure and growing gun culture. In the case of Walmart, I've only bought the one shotgun, but within a mile of the store I frequent, there are two other FFLs, one of which runs an indoor range which is used for training and league shooting.
A competitive market always works to the advantage of the buyer.

According to you, anyway. I guess Bigguy and I (along with scores of millions of other gun owners) just aren't perceptive enough to notice.

WOW, you claim Wal-Mart can not sell the gun cheaper than a mom and pop store? Another gun loon grasping at stupid reasons to defend stupid statements.

    8. Anon, while I can only speak for the two Walmarts I frequent in my area, my guess is that one of the big reasons the rifle didn't sell well was that they were rarely in stock. Most gun owners, before they make a purchase want to look over the item they are buying.
Perhaps its was just a function of the rifle being so popular it was hard to keep one on the shelf, but when I bought mine from a local gun store, I looked it over carefully to insure quality and it was what I wanted, and bought THAT one.
It often doesn't matter what the price is if it isn't in stock.

    9. What the hell does that have to do with the ridiculous statement I quoted from Big idiot? You ALWAYS have to divert the point; a sign of someone who has no leg to stand on his opinions, facts, or conclusions.

    10. I was giving my opinion on the reasons Walmart stopped selling these popular rifles.
I see Baldr is taking credit in the name of the gun control lobby for Walmart's business decision.

Strangely they are also talking about halting sales of "Modular Sniper Rifles" whatever the hell that is. There is a Remmington Modular Sniper Rifle just hitting the market, and goes for about fifteen grand minus optics. Not really a Walmart price point. My guess is that a scary black rifle with a scope equals the aforementioned MSR to the clueless.
Of course, the clueless wont realize that the Remington 700 with scope will likely be more accurate than the scoped Scary Black Rifle (SBR) and will still be sold by Walmart, even though the M-24 sniper system is based on that rifle. The Marines have been using the 700 since Viet Nam with a lot of success.

    11. Thanks for proving me correct again, it had nothing to do with my comment. Oh, that's right, only you can go off topic. The rest of us (according to you) must stick to the issue, or our comments mean nothing. Thanks again for proving what a hypocritical, dishonest, gun loon you are.

    12. That's why using your stupid Minnesota comparisons ALWAYS makes you look like a fool, and thanks for that.

    13. Well Anon, I'm sure that others here can contribute as to whether they are seeing the same indications of growth in the shooting sports as I've seen here. Perhaps they would be willing to share their observations.
I feel Minnesota is a good example because its a very liberal state that also has very liberal gun laws, as evidenced by the low grades that various gun control groups have awarded it.

    14. Minnesota, the home of sensible gun laws according to SS, but the latest mass shooting and killing, was in Minnesota. Enjoy your delusion SS.

Oh I don't just claim it anon, all you have to do is read the Walmart CEOs response to the questions as to why Walmart stops selling certain weapons. Secondly is the massive amount of radio adverts selling the same exact weapon Walmart sold for $200.00 less. Walmart can not compete. The reason they cant compete is that Walmart cut a deal for those guns while prices were still pretty high and ordered thousands of them. Since then prices fell sharply and Walmart is sitting on inventory that cant move because of their investment price. Crazy Gun Dealer (yes that's their actual store name), a single dealer that is not nation wide or even a chain, is selling the Smith & Wesson AR15 M&P for $499.00. This store is in Alvorado Texas, about 20 min south of me. BIG internet ad, tiny actual store. Good people, I go there every so often and the only place that puts a lifetime warranty on anything they sell, free CHL class with any gun purchase and a deal that they beat any legitimate advertised price anywhere. Walmart CAN NOT COMPETE with that and this kind of thing is happening everywhere anon.

So pull your head out anon and educate yourself instead of sounding like a fool that you are and continually proving it.

    16. Pull your head out of your ass BIG, they quit selling because the new CEO is against selling them. Next bullshit Big..........
Funny SS, try to get your precious Minnesota off the hook, while they are the latest mass shooting. Your lies are so obvious, you make me laugh. So go ahead compare one State to another, even if that State has 10 times as many people (it's even more than that).

    17. "So go ahead compare one State to another, even if that State has 10 times as many people (it's even more than that)."

Well Anon, the simple solution to your concern about the difference in populations is to look at homicide or violent crime rates. And if you look at the most recent FBI crime report you'll see that those rates for both California and Texas are about the same. And you'll see Minnesota's is much lower.

    18. Well anon I knew you could not read. Its because you have shit for brains having that head up there too long. Post the CEO letter stating as much.

    19. Again, Big has no idea what he's talking about, or the new CEO's position on these guns. It was national news at the time, but as usual you have no clue what you are talking about. Enjoy your delusion.

    20. If you have an example of the CEOs response then post it or forever be known as the eternal lying idiot.

  3. Well Anon, shall we compare Minnesota to a state such as California which is a favorite of the gun control lobby and see which has had more mass shootings and higher levels of violent crime and homicides?

    1. Right SS, another one of your idiot comparisons. Calif. has like 10 times the population of MN. On with your next lie........

    2. Only a fool like you would claim a State (Calif.) with 33 million more people than another State (MN) are comparable in any category. You are laughable some times.

    3. Well Anon, if the difference in populations concerns you, just use violent crime rates.
