Al Franken

  1. Odd. He started out as a comedian and ended up a politician and Sarah Palin started out as a politician and ended up as a comedian. Although with Franken his comedy was intentional and hers wasn't.

  3. I spoke about Al on my blog back on 15 April and how the delayed seating of Franken is one of the reasons why America is ranked as only the 20th most democratic country in the world. While no one will say it like I will, the real truth why Franken finally got seated is that the republican national leadership did not want to give any more money to Coleman and the legal fees he was incurring. With the 2010 mid term elections just 18 months away, the Republican Senate national re-election campaign group needs to spend the limited amount of cash it has in states it will have to defend in 2012.
Now as he is a member of the most exclusive club in the world, it will be interesting to see how liberal he remains. I predict however, that he will fall into the same trap that most other idealistic new comers to Washington fall into , and will become a party stooge and do what the party leaders tell him to do.

  4. Well, it all depends on what the party leaders tell him to do. If that's good stuff, then his cooperating shouldn't make him a stooge. On the other hand, if it's to invade North Korea, for example, and he goes along, I say "stooge" would be about right.

  5. I have been a fan of Franken for years and his comedy was always based on intelligence and social statement, even at its most stoopidist...
Many of the guests who were on his radio program expected to have to become stand up comics and were suprised at the level of actual debate and discussion he presented.
The man is a true policy wonk and will only raise the leve of discourse in the Senate!
