Murder / Suicide in Finland - 5 Dead

The BBC reports on the tragedy which struck the Finnish city of Espoo. On the video, the Finnish spokesman described the terrible action. One of the victims, presumably the main target, was the girfriend. Dare I say it? Guns are bad news for women, even in Finland.

  1. Finland has both licensing and registration. Apparently those things failed.

  2. Finland also has motor vehicle licensing and registration. Since people are killed in auto accidents those policies are a failure, too.

  3. "Finland also has motor vehicle licensing and registration."

Except auto licensing and registration never had anything to do with safety and everything to do with enabling taxation and confiscation.

Which is also the true purpose of gun licensing and registration, although gun controllers like to market it as a safety measure.

  4. How exactly would licensing and registration of firearms PREVENT people from misusing them?

Registration and licensing of cars doesn't prevent vehicular homicide or any other crimes committed using cars.

Let's see, automobiles have been licensed and registered in the U.S. for something over 100 years now, I think. They haven't all been confiscated.

  6. It would be an interesting case study to investigate the countries of Sweden, Norway, and Finland and see if there is a correlation between suicides rates. These three countries would interesting to study due to their similarity in (socialist) government models and cultures but differing in the control of alcohol and firearms.
Norway for example regulates alcohol usage due to the drug being a depressant. With the long winter and lack of sunshine, people are prone to be a little less happy. SAD is known as seasonal affected disorder.

For comparison, it would be very interesting to find a similar town or city in Alaska and compare the data with Alaska having more guns and more alcohol.

In all these discussions, the variable of alcohol needs to be remembered.
Just my two-euro cents (finish currency) worth of political analysis on the posting.

  7. Thanks Prince for the comment. I agree the alcohol factor is probably often overlooked.

Mike W., I don't think anyone is saying licensing and registration would prevent any specific incident. Why do you keep asking questions like that? You continually put words in the mouths of others and then argue against those words as if the others said them.

I believe full licensing and registration along with background checks on all transfers would eliminate much of the easy flow of guns into the criminal world. People would be more careful how they keep thier guns and how they let go of their guns.

Then what are impound lots for?

They're definitely not for the cars that aren't confiscated.

And what would licensing and registration do for the guns already in the criminal world?

Same old same old from FishyJay: When criminals CONTINUE to get guns (they want them SO MUCH that a way will be found), and when illegal shootings continue by gunowners who complied with and passed "full licensing and registration along with background checks," THEN will come MORE laws intended to drastically reduce gun ownership by the law-abiding.

Just a reminder here (unless you wish to deny it).

How many activists, politicians, and newspaper editorials call for confiscation of many types of automobiles? Now, how about guns. I see a difference -- do you?

Now, how about other countries? Has their been confiscation of many types of automobiles? But Britain has confiscated almost all handguns and semiauto and pump action rifles and shotguns.

  12. We can see MANY instances of registration and licensing of guns leading to confiscation, both here and in other countries.

    Do you deny that Demo?

How exactly will licensing and registration prevent crimes committed with firearms?
