But the bullies at the National Rifle Association and their obliging friends in the state Legislature (including all four lawmakers who represent Hernando) made absolutely sure of that last session, pushing through a law that imposes a $5,000 fine on any local government official who tries to uphold firearms bans in parks or public buildings.Think about it: A police officer could be fined a substantial portion of his or her annual salary for enforcing a rule that, in the city's case, carried a maximum penalty of being asked to leave the park. But here's how you %$#& with the NRA: get a couple of young, black men and provide them with CCWs. Have 'em hang out in public parks--especially in tourist areas-- with Tec-9s and Glocks hanging out of waistbands.
I'm pretty sure that law will be repealed in FL once the retirees, snowbirds and tourists give GOPers an earful.
Kinda like the Black Panthers toting around guns in the 1960s.
ReplyDeleteI like that Idea!
I don't get it. Why would an African-American man carrying a gun be any more threatening than, say, a Caucasian woman, or a Hispanic man, or an Asian woman?

Because people operate with stereotypes and preconceptions, and for some people that can have racial connotations?
Rather like the anti-gun types believing that all firearm owners are racist & would be upset about minorities exercising their rights? I think that's called "projection."
ReplyDelete"get a couple of young, black men and provide them with CCWs. Have 'em hang out in public parks--especially in tourist areas-- with Tec-9s and Glocks hanging out of waistbands."
ReplyDeleteI don't get it. What is the point of this? First, how can you provide someone else with a CCW license? Are you talking about committing forgery or some other illegal act to do so? Secondly, what would be the point of Tec-9's and Glocks hanging outside of waistbands in full view? Open carry is still illegal in Florida.
What purpose do you all have for manufacturing all of these crimes? What is the point? Why do you want to see young black men sent to jail? Are you racists?
Get the picture?
ReplyDeleteYou know what they have as highway signs when you drive into Florida?
ReplyDeleteArrive Alive
Now that's ironic.
And don't you think you're reinforcing those stereotypes? Any group -- including police -- holding weapons can be intimidating. Why did you pick African-Americans, who have the same rights as everyone else?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, Tenn Budd, one good explanation is that there is a significant overlap between 2nd Amendment fans who wish to exaggerate and distort what the constitutions establishes as a right, and those who are identified as racists.
ReplyDeleteI linked to an example of the ultra conservative radio broadcaster who referred to poor urban area residents where the population was >98% black as urban thugs, and advocated vigilante gun violence against those residents.
Another example would be the recent study of Tea Partiers identified as racist, and as anti-immigrant:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/17/opinion/crashing-the-tea-party.html?_r=1
These do tend to be the folks who most trash talk insurrection, and vigilantism, so it makes sense to expect that this narrow segment of the population would be more threatened than other segments.
We're not perpetuating stereotypes Anon, we're challenging them.
But here's how you %$#& with the NRA: get a couple of young, black men and provide them with CCWs. Have 'em hang out in public parks--especially in tourist areas-- with Tec-9s and Glocks hanging out of waistbands
ReplyDeleteJade, everyone knows that all black men are criminals so how are you going to get them CCWs?
Local officials will have to obey state law, what a concept.
The local dumbasses will have to do what they are told, get the fuck over it you moron.
There will be a lot of black people at the NRA Annual Meeting and Convention next year in St. Louis that will be surprised to find out that they are racists because they believe in gun rights.

I'm sure they would FWM. I'm sure they will also think fat white men are fools to try to conflate things that don't go together.
I'd also be surprised if there were nearly as many black people as there are white people at that event, and that the numbers in attendance will be disproportionately white compared to the numbers of people in the country nationwide, per the census.
So, while it might look like a lot of black people to you, I'm reasonalby sure that there will be proportionately very few there.
Still, why are you all advocating young black men be set up to commit crimes? I still don't get the point of this post.
ReplyDeleteYou think that anyone that supports gun rights are racists so you want to set black people up to go to jail? I don't get it.
Well, the FL House voted for it 85-33, and the FL Senate voted for it 30-8. With 81 Republicans in the House, and 28 in the Senate, that means a few Democrats voted for it, too. Turning this into a "Tea Party racist" argument doesn't really work.
ReplyDeleteI don't get how you're "challenging" racial stereotypes. You're pandering to people's ignorant fears. The struggle for rights to be equally applied to all Americans has been difficult and it's all too easy to slip backwards. You're not helping.
I think JadeGold has already reported that gun owners are predominately fat, white and middle-aged.
ReplyDelete"I think JadeGold has already reported that gun owners are predominately fat, white and middle-aged."
ReplyDeleteIf that were true, and we all know Jade says very little that is true, but for the sake of argument if it were true. How does setting up black youths to commit crimes and go to jail "%$#& with the NRA"? Why do you all condone such blatant racism?
