Gabby Giffords' husband Mark Kelly Buys Assault Weapon in Tucson

 Local news reports

Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords and an outspoken advocate for new gun control measures, purchased an AR-15 assault rifle in Tucson recently as a demonstration of what he says are unobtrusive background checks.

The retired space shuttle commander wrote on his Facebook page he would turn in the weapon - which he said he hadn't yet obtained -- to the city's police department.

"Looks like the judiciary committee will vote on background checks next week," Kelly wrote, referring to the Senate panel where gun control legislation is up for a vote this week.

"I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a 45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes," he continued.

Later, on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," Kelly said it was "important for me to have firsthand knowledge about how easy it is or difficult it is to buy a weapon like that."
Over on The Truth About Guns, which is getting less truthful all the time, they couldn't say enough about his hypocrisy.  Here's my favorite comment by Powers:

Looks like he fell in love with the AR’s while doing his research, and got caught. I agree, I bet he is a real gun lover and wanted one for personal use. It is ok for him and his family, but everyone else, it is too easy. Liar. And hypocrite. And as always, moron.

Is that a riot, or what? Those guys are so enamored of their fetish items they actually think guns are irresistible. Mark Kelly "got caught."

  1. Whatever his reason, he gave money to a gun store and a gun manufacturer, and as a legal buyer, he proved nothing. People who are a concern will get guns from other sources--possibly even the ATF. Thought we'd forgetten Dumb and Spurious?

  2. So his problem now is that the background check was too easy? It is not like he bought the weapons without having a background check performed.

    1. I guess he feels he should not have passed?

  3. Are you really buying his story, Mike? He decided to burn $1500 to make a point? Which really was a donation to the store and gun manufacturer. And if he was trying to prove a point, where is his proof? Was he documenting this "easy" transaction? The only documentation is from gunnies who recognized him and took pictures. It was only after he got busted that he came out about it. Come on, Mike, if you are going to claim any semblance of reason in this debate, you gotta let this one go. He bought it because he wanted it. That is why people buy things. How many guns have you bought just to melt them down?

My take is that his heart isn't in this fight. I think he is doing this because of immense political pressure. Obama gave the order that now is the time for gun control, and they need Giffords and Kelly in the spotlight. How else do you explain why he is taking an activist role now, as opposed to right after his wife got shot? Sure he didn't have the time then, but he wasn't even talking like an activist. Where were his calls for bans two years ago?

    1. I think the most likely explanation is that he wanted to be able to say from now on that he has personal experience in buying these kinds of guns. He's anticipating the gotcha questions from people like you.

  4. "even to buy and assault weapon the check only takes a matter of minutes".

I know- the wonders of technology. Does he expect the electrons to move a little slower if the gun has a barrel shroud? He just bought another semi-automatic, detachable magazine fed, pistol gripped gun (one that is actually concealable). Is he expecting a check to allow someone a .45 1911 clone, and not allow him an AR? I really don't understand what his point is. Do you, Mike?

  5. On this idiot's Facebook page one of the people commenting pointed out that since he wasn't buying the rifle for himself it was actually a straw purchase and he should be arrested. The comments on his Facebook page are not what you would call, 'friendly'.

    1. As long as you support gun control, you get a pass on breaking any gun laws. See David Gregory for an example.

  6. I just hope someone turns Mr. Kelley's money into something nice like a FAL. Who'da thunk prices would get so ramped up that you could trade a poodle shooter in for something nice in God and JMB'S Own caliber!
