No, this home security system is better than a gun

A good security system protects your home when you aren't there. It will alert you if you are away. It can even send the video to a remote location.

Can a gun do that?

And better yet--how many people have been hurt or killed by a video camera?

The best part  is that you can buy this system for less than what a gun will cost.  And if you're able to set up a Stereo or other home entertainment system, you can set this up yourself!

Of course, there are a lot of other options which are much better than a gun for home security, but if you want the option of having a burglar make you a target--the choose the gun!

And hope like hell that it doesn't get used against you.

When the shit hits the fan isn't the best time to realise that you have been lied to by the "pro-gun" crowd.

  1. Oh, Laci… If you read your own blog maybe you would not have posted this right after a post about how a security camera stood by and watched as its owner got beaten.

    1. No, that's not an excellent point. Is it to say home video surveillance is not good. That doesn't sound like an excellent point to me?

    2. No, they serve different functions, and having both is fine. Security cameras are nice for catching and prosecuting someone someone after they beat you.

Laci, How exactly does owning a gun cause burglars to target you? Keeping if from being used against you is easy. Call police, move to where you can defend your family, and wait for police.
The criminal then decides if he's going to be shot. If he leaves, or stays away from you, then he doesn't get shot.
If a burglar intentionally enters an occupied home, you can assume he's willing to initiate force if discovered. That would make him a robber.

  3. If someone breaks into your home while you're there, all the camera can do is film you being robbed, hurt, or killed. This would be Laci's choice for what should happen to good citizens.

    1. Laci would fire a capgun at them, unless of course he didn't prematurely discharge it first.

  4. The others have already given good, logical answers to Laci's points, but the simplicity of the counter arguments shows what a total load of crap this post is. Frankly, it doesn't even deserve the dignity of the responses it's gotten. Instead, it deserves to be laughed at and ignored, much like its author, the hit and run artist extraordinaire.

    1. That sounds a bit harsh, T. What I wondered is how many of you tough gun owners DO NOT have a security system like this in place?

    2. At present, we live in an apartment that suits our needs. I doubt the landlord wants us drilling lots of holes and installing wiring.

    3. Mike,

I don't consider it harsh. Laci takes a good point--that home defense systems, especially visible ones, can deter burglars, but then runs too far with it, suggesting that it is a complete defense, that one couldn't possibly need a gun as long has he has these systems, and that the gun draws criminals in. It's hack work. Yes, a system is a good deterrent. It doesn't guarantee that people won't break in--in fact, the ones who do will likely be the more hardened variety who might either intend harm, or just as soon harm you if you happen to be there.

As for the gun making you a target, sure, if you ostentatiously display valuable guns, criminals might come in to steal them just as they might break in if they see your big TV or computer--it's valuable property they can steal. The gun is not some magical crime attractor.

As for your question, I don't know how many do or do not. Most that I know do. The gun is the last ditch home security. My family always had a security system, even if we had to install it ourselves. When I moved out into an apartment, like Greg said, I couldn't drill holes and install one myself, so I took other precautions--sensors on windows that went off if it was opened, a door stop alarm that was deafening if the door was opened and touched it, etc. Most criminals would be scared off by the alarm. Hopefully others would be by my racking a shell into my shotty and shining the gun mounted light out of the bedroom.

You think I and the others are bloodthirsty maniacs, but frankly, we'd rather burglars flee from alarms, etc. The guns are in case of a criminal who ignores such things.

Post Script for Greg and others living in Apartments: I got the Doorstop and window sensors at Northern Tool and Equipment. N.B. Do NOT trust the adhesive on the stick on Window/Sliding Door sensors or you will be checking your apartment for intruders at zero dark thirty--not fun, but it lets you know how your body will react to the adrenaline...

  5. It would make a great backup system to being armed. You have a video record of the cause and reasons of having to ultimately defending yourself. Armed and cameras, a win win!

    1. I'd even skip the armed part, but thanks for the only reasonable comment, Texas. The others seem to have a knee-jerk reaction to anything Laci offers.

    2. If Laci will ever be reasonable, I'd respond in kind. In fact, if he's come around and discuss, instead of hitting and running, and if he's lay off the insults, I'd give him a chance.

    3. Your being unreasonable is Laci's fault, is that it?

    4. I'm not being unreasonable. I'm just tired of crafting intelligent responses to Laci's crap. He gets what he deserves from me.

  6. Security is one of the reason why some people choose to install home security system, I think I prefer having such system than having a gun for I have kids and owning a gun might cause danger.
