Defense Bill Would Put 100,000 Untraceable Guns On Streets

Huffington Post link provided by George Jefferson with this in the subject line: "Once again Huffpo chooses not to tell the whole truth...just like Fox?‏"

I'm sure he'll humor us with an explanation, first about what the "whole truth" is and second, how anyone can possibly be compared to Fox News in the mendacious, trickster department.

According to a white paper prepared for Congress by the Army opposing the amendment, the measure would allow the unregulated distribution of up to 100,000 Colt .45s, more formally known as .45-caliber semiautomatic M1911 handguns.

The provision, added by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), changes parts of federal rules that were meant to boost rifle skills in the country under a program dating back to Teddy Roosevelt. Under existing law, which was updated in 1996, the Department of Defense makes surplus military rifles available to the public through something known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which has a regional headquarters in Rogers' state.

Rogers' amendment would change language in the law that specifies certain rifles allowed in the program to include the much broader category of "firearms."

Although the marksmanship program aims to educate youth about safety and shooting, according to the military's white paper, "There is a significant risk of approximately 100K semi-automatic handguns that are virtually untraceable, being released into commerce."

That's because although the amendment specifies that the weapons cannot be sold to people who are barred by law from having guns, the CMP sells guns over the Internet, and has no mechanism to verify who is making purchases. By law, the CMP "can sell ... only to members of CMP affiliated clubs who are also U.S. citizens, over 18 years of age and who are legally eligible to purchase a firearm," according to eligibility requirements posted on its website. On top of that, although the CMP is allowed by law to sell guns across state lines, it is not covered by the Gun Control Act, and is not required to keep records tracking purchasers.

The Army noted in its opposition that the Department of Justice has tracked an average of nearly 1,800 Colt .45s being used in crimes every year over the last decade, including a significant but unspecified number of those guns that were originally military surplus.

Rogers' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesman for Rep. Adam Smith (Wash.), the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said his boss agreed with the Army and would try to strip the amendment.

"This provision, which the Army has said it does not want or need, could potentially put nearly 100,000 untraceable .45-caliber military-grade handguns on our streets," the spokesman, Michael Amato, said in an email. "This provision is an unnecessary risk."

My guess is that he's referring to the fact that the requirements to purchase a firearm through the Civilian Marksmanship Program is even more involved and drawn out than a regular purchase. An NICS check is still done, and if your state requires a special purchase permit, you have to send them that also.
Bob Owens did a pretty good article on Huffpo's challenges in the accuracy department.

And to insure that you can verify the facts, here is the CMP's page listing the requirements to purchase firearms,

  2. So the solution is simple. Go with the recommendation of the U.S. Army, not some bitch, republican politician. Shut down internet sales. WTF is wrong with these guys? Is it really all about sucking the glass dick of the NRA?

There isn't shit the dickhead republicans can do. They will never have a majority again. Hopefully they won't win the presidency for at least another twelve years. Where the hell are the good republicans?

    2. Aren't you guys at all concerned with the number of these guns which will get into the wrong hands? Do you think one of you good gun owners will always be there to save the day?

Did you read the process you have to go through in order to get a firearm through this program?
Not only do you have to join a CMP affiliated club, you also have to document participation in marksmanship activity. There is an exception for those who are members of the military, law enforcement, etc.
They also run an NICS check. And from what I've been reading the whole process takes at least a couple of months. All for a very old pistol which will need some work to make it practical for every day carry. Most will likely become part of a collection.

I won't presume to speak for Mr. Jefferson, but as for myself, nope--especially given the fact that you consider my hands to be "the wrong hands."

    5. So you think adding 100,000 to 300,000,000 makes a difference?

    6. why would we be any more concerned about these guns than we are about the other 400 million plus guns already available...these guns are serialized and hence traceable as much as any other gun is "Do you think one of you good gun owners will always be there to save the day?"...wont be me in a shit situation I will only be concerned with the safety of myself and my family you and others keep telling us thats what cops are for well let them prove it

    7. Good point, TS. It's not like we're flooding the market with these things. Nevertheless, since guns do more harm than good, especially in the ever-loosening situation we have today, this is a bad deal.

"I'm sure he'll humor us with an explanation, first about what the "whole truth" is and second, how anyone can possibly be compared to Fox News in the mendacious, trickster department.".....The fact that paint huffing post intentional tried to mislead its readers by lying about the process by which one obtains a firearm from the CMP Im sure that is humorous to you Mike.....The fox news thing was me just checking to see if you have come around to realizing that all the so called news outlets are full of shit and not just Fox ....but I see you are still feverishly gulping down what the liberal outlets are putting in your bowl .....

    1. They "intentional tried to mislead?" Is that right? Your evidence is what, the fact that you disagreed with what they said? And that makes you a mindreader?

I always assume racism is a factor. Do you even need to ask (two times)?
