Derek Carlile Goes Back to Work

Derek Carlile

Seattlepi further to our previous discussion

A Marysville police officer who was fired and then reinstated after his gun killed his 7-year-old daughter is set to return to work Friday.
Derek Carlile appealed his firing and last month was awarded his job back in binding arbitration.
The Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1d4LmeP ) city officials have not said what Carlile's position will be. The 32-year-old previously worked in patrol.
In March 2012, Carlile left a .38-caliber revolver in a parked van with his children. His 3-year-old son found it and fatally shot his 7-year-old sister.
A jury was unable to reach a verdict on a manslaughter charge against Carlile. He was fired in the spring of 2013, but the Marysville Police Officers Association won a grievance case to have him reinstated.

Derek Carlile Loses Job but Keeps Guns

Marysville police announced Monday that Officer Derek Carlile will not be returning to the police force.

The Seattle Times reports on the story which we posted before

Carlile has been on paid administrative leave since March 2012, when his toddler son found a handgun and fatally shot his 7-year-old sister. Carlile had left the gun in the family van while the children were unattended.

Carlile had been charged with second-degree manslaughter after the shooting, but the charge was dismissed after a Snohomish County jury was unable to reach a verdict after a trial in Snohomish County Superior Court at the end of last year.

Carlile, 32, and his family were in a rush to get to a wedding when they stopped off at a friend’s antiques shop in Stanwood on March 10, 2012. Carlile and his wife had left their four children in the van alone for a few minutes when their then-3-year-old son found a loaded .38-caliber revolver that Carlile had left in a cup holder between the front seats.

Carlile’s son got out of his booster seat, grabbed the gun and shot his sister Jenna in the abdomen. She died at a Seattle hospital.
