Ridiculous NRA Conspiracy Theory Claims Obama Will Ban All Ammo

Media Matters

National Rifle Association (NRA) Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre relied on numerous falsehoods to claim that President Obama will move to ban sales of all firearm ammunition before he leaves office, thus making "the very real nightmare of every single gun owner in this country" a reality.

In the May issue of the NRA's magazine, America's 1st Freedom, LaPierre wrote, "President Barack Obama is setting the table to ban your ammunition -- all of it," and claimed that "the remaining two years of Obama's term pose the greatest threat ever to the Second Amendment and our freedom."

Better than Somalia: How to Feel Good About Gun Violence

Armed with Reason

We recently discussed a YouTube video entitled, “Number One With A Bullet”

How Not To Compare International Homicide Rates

Unsurprisingly, the United States does indeed have a lower homicide rate than countries in the middle of civil war, run by despots, or struggling with crippling poverty. Should we really be patting ourselves on the back though that our homicide rate just barely beats out Yemen, number 109 on the list, and the fifth most dangerous country in the world? Should we be bragging that our country has less per capita murder than Somalia or Zimbabwe — countries that are literally run by warlords?

Comparing the U.S. with countries that have nothing in common only guarantees that whatever the true relationship between guns and homicide is, we won’t be able to find it.

Indeed, using Whittle’s methodology, you can make almost all of America’s problems disappear overnight by simply expanding our peer group. For example, our infant mortality rate is the highest among industrialized nations, but if we include all of the world’s countries in our comparison, including those where children regularly die from diarrhea and measles within a couple months of being born, we rank No. 34!

What A Valid Analysis Reveals

But that’s clearly not the appropriate way to think about public health problems. Serious academics restrict their analysis to countries that have attained a certain level of gross national income (GNI). This is extremely important because it enables researchers to control for confounding variables that may drive the homicide rate upwards, such as the presence of ethnic or religious conflict, or widespread poverty. One way to do this is by using the World Bank’s definition of a high-income OECD country. Thirty-one countries meet the criteria of a per capita GNI $12,616.

When academics further refine this list of countries using socio-economic factors they reveal a harrowing picture. Compared with other high-income countries, the United States has a homicide rate 6.9 times higher, a difference driven almost exclusively by firearm homicide rates that are 19.5 times higher. The same is true for firearm suicide and unintentional firearm death, for which the United States has rates that are 5.8 and 5.2 times higher, respectively, than other industrialized countries.

A 2013 study also showed that among the highest income countries “there was a significant positive correlation between guns per capita per country and the rate of firearm-related deaths.” A recent study in the American Journal of Medicine also showed that among the highest income countries, “there was a significant positive correlation between guns per capita per country and the rate of firearm-related deaths.” The authors concluded that: “the current study debunks the widely quoted hypothesis that guns make a nation safer.”

Research on female homicide victimization reveals an even more startling picture: the United States is the sole outlier in female homicide rates among high-income countries. Even though American females represent only 32 percent of the overall female population among industrialized nations, the United States accounts for 84 percent of all female firearm homicides.

Minnesota Gun Bill HF1361/SF1289

--(Ammoland.com)- Since 1989, Minnesota Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance (GOCRA) has been your gun rights watchdog at the Capitol. We get the job done with your support.

When the Bloomberg money keeps flowing, the gun controllers keep finding new ways to take away guns — and rights. This year’s attempt is the most despicable, underhanded attempt we’ve ever seen.

This week, Rep. Dan Schoen and Sen. Ron Latz introduced…well, we call it the Sign Away Your Rights & Rat Out Your Family Act. The Bloomberg bill, HF1361/SF1289, starts with the assumption that every gun owner is a ticking time bomb. The bill would encourage doctors to trick you into giving up your gun rights, and encourage your most anti-gun family member to petition a court to take away your Second Amendment rights.

Tricks And Kicks Gun Owners When They’re Down

Everyone has moments in life where things seem hopeless. A death in the family, a job loss, PTSD from military service, a divorce… Responsible gun owners know that a doctor or psychologist can help. But this bill would encourage doctors to trick you into signing away your rights!

Imagine: there you are. You’re hurting. You go see a professional. He listens, then says he can help. He gives you a pile of forms to sign. Buried among them is a form created by this bill — one that puts you on the NICS no-buy list. “Voluntarily.”

Texas Mom Pulls Gun on 14-Year-old Daughter's Rival During Playground Girlfight

Virianda Alvarez is accused of pointing a gun at the head of student Victoria Myers during a fight the girl was having with Alvarez' daughter at a Texas high school.

Local news reports with video

Mommy brought a gun to a fistfight.

Texas-style justice went too far when a mom tried to sway a playground fight between her 14-year-old daughter and a rival by pointing a handgun at the head of the other girl, video from the incident shows.

Hours after the Tuesday girlfight at a park next to Pasadena High School in suburban Houston — broken up by campus police — Viridiana Alvarez, 33, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after photos and video emerged of the gun-toting mom.

New NRA Talking Point: Opponents Of Guns On Campus Are "OK With Some Sexual Assaults Occurring"

Media Matters

During the February 24 edition of the NRA News radio program Cam & Company, Edwards asserted that opponents of guns on campus believe that in "almost every sexual assault, there is alcohol involved," so a "gun wouldn't help." Because of this, Edwards said, opponents of guns on campus are "OK with some sexual assaults occurring when they could be prevented."

Edwards went on to describe the position of those who say that guns on campus are not a solution to sexual assault: "So what they're saying is, they are OK with real sexual assaults happening -- whether they acknowledge that they are saying this or not, ultimately their position is that they are OK with real sexual assaults happening because they are afraid of accidents that might take place if campus carry were allowed."

In fact, Edwards is mischaracterizing recent arguments against guns as a solution to campus sexual assault, which have pointed out that guns will not actually make women on campus safer.

As Amanda Marcotte wrote at Slate, "[W]ould it actually improve campus safety? No. Most rapes, especially among college students, are acquaintance rapes and defy the burglar-coming-in-the-window fantasy of self defense that gun advocates like to invoke."

Similarly, Jia Tolentino wrote at Jezebel: "[G]uns make domestic violence more deadly for women. Rape on college campuses (as well as in general) happens in situations that mirror very closely the dynamic of domestic violence -- the introduction of coercion and sexual assault under the cover of relationships and interactions that seem outwardly acceptable."

According to academic research, students who carried guns while at college were more likely to report "being victims and perpetrators of physical and sexual violence at college" compared to students who did not.

A 2002 study in the Journal of American College Health by researchers affiliated with the Harvard School of Public Health found that students who keep guns at college are more likely to engage in risky or illegal behavior. Specifically, they wrote, "Compared with students who did not have a firearm at college, those who had a firearm were more likely to be male (85% vs 43%); to be White (91% vs 72%); to live off campus (86% vs 57%); to live with a significant other (16% vs 8%); to drive a motor vehicle after binge drinking (27% vs 9%); to have unprotected sex when under the influence of alcohol (17% vs 10%); to vandalize property (21% vs 10%); and to get into trouble with the police (10% vs 6%)." The authors also addressed the interplay between binge drinking and violent behavior, concluding, "Given that alcohol is widely thought to contribute to violent behavior generally and to a majority of college student suicides, rapes, and other violent crimes, we find it quite troubling that almost two thirds of students with guns at college report binge drinking."

Even as Shootings Rise, Murder Rate Falls in New York City

Reuters

The number of shootings in New York City has spiked by 13 percent so far this year, though the murder rate is on track to hit a 50-year low, a statistical paradox that experts said reflects quick medical response.
As of Sunday, some 507 people had been struck by bullets since Jan. 1 in New York City, up from 448 in the comparable period a year ago, according to data compiled by the New York City Police Department.
There has been a particular uptick in shootings over the past month, with 121 victims of gunfire over a 28-day period ending Sunday, compared with 86 for the same period last year, marking a 41 percent increase.
But homicides have continued to fall in the nation's largest city. There were 120 murders reported so far in 2014 compared with 140 a year earlier, a 15 percent decline, the data indicated. That puts the city on track to set a new low after posting a total of 333 murders last year, the fewest homicides recorded in citywide crime statistics dating back to 1963.
Police Commissioner William Bratton has said spikes and declines in crime rates are not unusual.

The declining homicide rate, despite an increase in shooting victims, reflects in part improved emergency medical response time, said Steven Messner, a criminal justice professor at the State University of New York at Albany.
Isn't that interesting. It seems the gun rights fanatics have been trying to pull a fast one over on us, again. Murder rates are dropping overall (just slightly) but the number of shootings has been increasing. Combined with the fact that fewer and fewer people own guns, in other words the average number of guns per (gun owning) capita has increased, this destroys one of their main talking points: more guns means less crime. Ha, take that.

The Truth about Australia's Gun Laws

Historical Population of Australia, 1788 to FutureHomicide victims from 1993 to 2007 (number per year)

In response to the extremely rare spree shooting in Australia, the gun nuts blamed the strict gun laws. That's pretty funny, especially since their shootings are now so rare that when they have one it's international news.

A pro-gun article I read said murders are only slightly down since the implementation of their stricter gun laws, but as we can see from the above charts, murders are down and population is up.

You know what that means, right?

Did Dianne Feinstein Really Want to Ban All Guns?

As indicated in our earlier post, the famous comments of Dianne Feinstein referred only to Assault Weapons.  Yet, the gun rights fanatics went crazy with her quote.

 on Youtube

on Breitbart

on Info Wars

on Right Wing News/

Those are just a few of the major sites which perpetuated this lie.  Dozens of small time gun blogs picked it up and  repeated it as often as possible, knowing that's how to lend credibility to a falsehood.

Kurt, the guy whose integrity and honesty are indisputable (according to him) said this:

As for what Feinstein was talking about with the "turn them all in," I hadn't realized there was any question that she was referring specifically to so-called "assault weapons," rather than all guns. I certainly have never pretended otherwise.

Now I ask you, for a guy who reads and writes about guns every day, is it credible that he "hadn't realized there was any question that she was referring specifically to so-called "assault weapons?" "

Lying Kurt Hofmann Calls Maryland Gun Dealer Andy Raymond a Quisling, Thereby Supporting and Encouraging the Death Threats

St. Louis Examiner

Strong enough, indeed, that Raymond soon beat his own hasty retreat, ending his "smart gun" sales plan before it had begun--but not without posting a rage-filled, whiskey-fueled, obscenity-laden rant on video (see sidebar video if extensive use of very strong language does not offend you) condemning gun rights advocates who had expressed their objections to his plan.

Kurt is so passionate about the cause, he feels no need to constrain himself within the bounds of honesty.  Anyone who watched the video knows that Mr. Raymond was not railing against "gun rights advocates who had expressed their objections to his plan."  He was railing against the fanatics who THREATENED HIS LIFE because of his plan to reach fence sitters and gun control folks by selling smart guns.

By calling the man a quisling, Kurt, who has an exceptional grasp of the English language and its nuances, is purposely supporting those fanatics and encouraging others to act similarly.

Shannon Watts Encounter with Dana Loesch

Wonkette provides the whole story behind this encounter that got a lot of mileage out of the lying gun nuts like Nick Leghorn.

In Indianapolis Watts had a run-in with howling rage harpy Dana Loesch, of whom she has run afoul for a variety of reasons, including apparently calling Loesch a “paid shill” of Magpul Industries, the gun manufacturer that fled Colorado last year after that state imposed some new gun-control laws. Loesch claims she has never been employed by Magpul and has been after Watts for months demanding an apology for this vicious lie. What yr Wonkette finds entertaining about this little argument is that last summer we wrote about a rally Magpul participated in just before Colorado’s new laws went into effect, at which the company handed out hundreds of its 30-round magazines that were about to become illegal.

Magpul flew these magazines to the rally by helicopter, along with a noted anti-gun-control advocate by the name of…Dana Loesch! Dana even took two of Magpul’s magazines home with her and named them “Piers” and “Morgan.” Most parents would just get their kids a couple of goldfish.

Anyway, we suppose any appearance fee paid to Dana came from the rally’s organizers and not from Magpul. Or maybe Dana didn’t get an appearance fee at all so she could remain a pure and uncorrupted spokeswoman for her civil right to stroke a gun anywhere and anytime she wants. Yr Wonkette is of the opinion that flying into a gun rally with several crates of Magpul products, speaking at that rally and then taking two of the products home and bragging about them meets the definition of the word “shilling.” And also that Dana Loesch is dumber than a bag of gun hammers.

So you hang in there, Shannon Watts and Moms Demand Action. If you’ve got the gun nuts frothing at the mouth this hard, you must be doing something right.

Why do the Gun Nuts Hate Gun Buy Back Programs So Much?

The Natural Truth

So Mayor Marty can say over and over again “we’re not looking for your grandpa’s shotgun from over the door,” but those are the guns he’s going to get. Everybody knows it.

Everybody knows there will be just as many shootings in the next 12 months with or without the “Piece for Peace” program. We’ll just be out $100,000.

In typical lying pro-gun form the authors of this article claim things that are false or that they could not possibly know.  The fact is gun buy back programs do not receive ONLY junk guns. And no one could possibly know that "there will be just as many shootings in the next 12 months."

The people who run these programs obviously believe they save lives.  I believe that.
