More on the Claim that 40% of Gun Sales are Without Background Checks

At a recent Senate hearing, Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson went so far as to say, “Allowing 40 percent of those acquiring guns to bypass background checks is like allowing 40 percent of airline passengers to board a plane without going through airport security.”

What gun control proponents never say, though, is that this oft-repeated statistic is based on stale data that was grossly exaggerated even when it was fresh.

As The Washington Post has pointed out, this 40 percent figure comes from a 1997 report by the National Institute of Justice, a research agency within the Department of Justice, and was based on a telephone survey sample of just 251 people who acquired firearms in 1993 and 1994. This was years before the NICS system went into effect. Of the 251 participants, 35.7 percent said that they didn’t or “probably” didn’t obtain their gun from a licensed firearms dealer. Because the margin of error was +/– 6 percentage points, it was rounded up to 40 percent, although it could just as easily and legitimately have been rounded down below 30 percent.

As we said last time this popped up in the news, you could call it 30% or even 20% and the argument for background checks is the same.

This is the issue which separates the honest and reasonable people from the fanatics. Wayne La Pierre has left his minions without a proper response on this one.  All he says is "criminals won't obey," which is one of the stupidest arguments around.

This is the litmus test for true gun rights fanaticism-

And we say laws in the plural because there were indeed more than one. We’ve been discussing primarily the German Weapons Act of 1938, passed in March of that year, which as we’ve noted before, significantly deregulated firearms. It also prohibited Jews from manufacturing and selling them; one gets the impression that the intent was to prevent Jews, whom the Nazis regarded as subhuman, from handling the sacred implements of power that they later would touch with their own hands. Even so, note that this law itself did not expressly ban Jews from owning guns.

It wasn’t until November of that year that a different law, The Regulations Against Jews’ Possession Of Weapons, did what its name suggested. That’s right: even though they’d subjected the Jews to just about every form of degradation and brutal oppression possible, it took the Nazis  five years before they actually got around to barring Jews from owning guns. Gives you some indication just what an all-consuming priority it was, doesn’t it? Furthermore, this law was passed only after Kristallnacht, which might have given Jews an incentive to retaliate violently.

You know, if we removed from the pro-gun argument all the things that are made-up and false, there wouldn't be much left.

Was There Racism in La Pierre's Remarks?

I'm often the first one to call Conservatives on racism, but I have to say I dinn't see it in these remarks. Did you?

I suppose it could be argued, like Michael Moore did one time, that in the mind of most white people, who predominantly make up Wayne La Pierre's audience, the imagined looters or home invaders or criminals in general are usually black or Hispanic.

Nevertheless, it seems to me the Lefties are making too much of these comments by calling them racist.

Forgetful PA Gun Owner Arrested at NJ Airport

Officials say a Pennsylvania man was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after screeners noticed a loaded gun in his carry-on bag.

59-year-old Robert Kellerman of Long Pond was taken into custody just after 6 a.m. Sunday by Port Authority police. They were notified after Transportation Security Administration screeners saw the .22-caliber handgun at a checkpoint inside Terminal C.

Kellerman was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. Officials say Kellerman told police he forgot the gun was inside the bag.

Airline passengers are permitted to travel with firearms only in checked baggage. They must be stored properly and unloaded.

The reason guys like this should get the one-strike-you're-out treatment is twofold. First, because their behavior is exactly the same as the bad guy who has violent intentions and second, because the same kind of forgetfulness with regards weapons can be dangerous.

Mindy McCready Kills Herself with a Gun

Country music star Mindy McCready was found dead Sunday at her home in Arkansas from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the local sheriff's office said in a statement. She was 37. 

Deputies from the Cleburne County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a report of gunshots fired Sunday afternoon and found McCready's body on the front porch, the statement read. 

McCready leaves behind two boys, one of whom is 10 months old. The infant's father, record producer David Wilson, died of an apparent suicide last month.
