Medal Count

Unrelated to the photo on the left, a good friend of mine pointed out that Great Britain is holding a solid third place with only a tiny fraction of the population of the US and China. I guess that's why they ran the world for so long. Didn't they also own Jamaica at one point?

The New York Times has the story.

  1. Now here's a thing - the official rankings are based on most golds - but the US media produces rankings based on total medals. Guess which way is better for the US ranking? You got it...

Over here - the main fun is in baiting Australians about having more golds (and medals generally) than them. There's nothing the English love more than beating the Australians (okay getting drunk and fighting but they aren't sports - yet). The last team England beat Australia at cricket the team had an open coach procession through London, a Prime Ministerial reception and a visit to Buckingham Palace to be made Members of the Most Honourable Order of the British Empire - to give it it's full title - you get to put MBE after your name. I kid you not!

  2. Yeah, I'm sure everybody spins it the best way they can.

I love that story about the cricket players. Is that the same as being knighted? I get the point though. You Brits are incredibly competitive.

I can't wait for the next Olympics.
