Is Bill Maher More Offensive Than Glenn Beck?

From Mediaite.

If you thought Glenn Beck putting on an evil witch voice to imitate Malia Obama was offensive, this one is going to blow your socks off. Last night, Bill Maher lamented President Barack Obama’s “professorial” personality, noting with a hint of betrayal in his voice that he was expecting a “real black president”– you know, the kind that “lifts up his shirt so they can see the gun in his pants.”

I think Maher is a funny stand-up comedian, while Glenn Beck is an influential political commentater. That makes Beck's nonsense about the kid offensive and Maher's joke about the gun, just a joke. What do you think?

  1. Considering the majority of Maher's show is political commentary (often with political guests), he's really no different than Beck.

  2. Mikeb, haven't you been spending a few posts trying to say:

"It's bad when your guy does it but OK when our guy does it."

  3. Bill Maher is the only real "newsy" show that i watch, and i didnt have a problem with that bit about obama, mainly for the reason Mike described.

He's trying to inform while he's trying to be entertaining. Its just a joke.

    Lighten up, Francis :)

  4. Lemme see; Bill Maher is on HBO, a uh, whatchmacallit, an entertainment network that offers its viewers enetertainment without, afaia, a lot of confusing news programs.

Glennie Bek's show, otoh, is broadcast on Fox NEWS and runs without a webcrawl or anything of that sort saying, "This is not news, but the rants of a batshit KKKrazy mf'er whose listeners are blissfully ignorant of the fact that his "facts" are about as factual as the writing on Fox's actual comedy offerings. But I guess that's understandable when you consider that, unlike HBO, Fox only has the one channel to do everything--oh, wait, my bad, they got like 20something channels, including some that do, like, entertainment--including comedy.

Is Maher as abrasive, goofy and bombastic as Bek? Absolutely. Does he lie as much? Not hardly. Does Maher claim that his rants are comdedy only when he's called out for reprehensible comments? Not to my knowledge. But, yeah, other than those things Bek is JUST LIKE Maher.

You also left out the part where Beck's audience is a gazillion times larger than Maher.

Oh, I get it, the size of the audience means that Bek is right? Or does it mean that there are a lot of unhinged morons just like him, without a bully pulpit. who have to get their thrills vicariously?

  8. No Demo, what it means is that no one really gives a shit what Maher says.

That's not true with Beck. While I rarely ever here people on the right saying "hey, did you catch Beck today?", the left seems to want to talk about him on a daily basis. I've seen more on Beck on just this website than on any gunblog. You guys are the real Beck fanboys.

Yep. The left does this to everyone they hate (I.E. anyone with a dissenting opinion)

See how they treat Palin or Limbaugh. Hell, if you listened to the left you'd think Rush Limbaugh was responsible for all the evil in the world.

  10. I admit it. Beck fanboy here. Somehow, Palin and Limbaugh don't do it for me like old Glenn does.

  11. Mike, I think you just enjoy feeling outraged.
I'm starting to think it's the entire reason for this blog. I mean, what other purpose does it serve?
