Texas Gun Owner Refuses to Continue to Participate

Salon

It’s not that I’m opposed to gun ownership, or have become anti-gun; I just could not in good conscience be any part of an industry that refuses to take basic common-sense measures to address the problem we face today. Sadly, I’ve had to give up a few sports I truly enjoyed. But, in the end, if that makes any difference at all, it is worth it. It’s a sacrifice that I feel morally obligated to make. And, until we as a society can come together to pass common-sense gun legislation, it’s a sacrifice I’ll happily continue to make.

  1. I happily support his right to what he wishes to distance himself from the gun culture though I personally don't agree with his logic. And I even support him trying to shame the rest of us into following his example, though as I said, it isn't logical.
He claims he doesn't want to take away peoples' guns, except of course for the ones he doesn't approve of.

"That night, I called a few of my friends who I knew to be responsible gun owners and gave away the guns I owned."

There is no mention of it, but I wonder if this man who advocates for "common sense" gun laws made his responsible gun owner friends that he gave his guns to undergo an NICS background check before they took possession.

    1. Looks like a potential case of breaking Obama's new "in the business" rule. He should probably be prosecuted.

    2. His "logic" is based on facts. Facts that tell us it's irrational paranoia to carry a gun for protection.

Of course Anon, why would anyone possibly think that any of the over 1.1 million violent crimes committed in the last year might have happened to them?

    4. And that's your opinion.

    5. Paranoid delusion that YOU would be the one in 312 million. That's lotto numbers. Are you buying lotto tickets SS?

Anon, you need to work on those math skills. Using the FBI crime report, there were a bit over 1.1 million violent crimes committed in 2014.
Using your population number, that's one violent crime for every 300 people in one year.
As for your reference to the lottery, I certainly wouldn't want to "win" this one considering that either me or my family would be put in danger. However, if nothing happens, there are exactly zero negative consequences of me being prepared.

    7. Nice math there, buddy. Much like those memes going around making fun of Bernie Sanders, you are casually dropping a million off one side of the equation. 312 million divided by 1.1 million equals 1 in 284. The difference is you were probably being serious.

    8. Someone is gonna win that lottery. But the chances of being a victim of violent crime are far higher than the chances of winning that lottery. Someone will still win that lottery. Your chances, anon, are better at being a victim than a lottery winner. Much better.

    9. I like to give Mike a good ribbing when he is one or two orders of magnitude off. But our anonymous friend takes the cake with his six orders of magnitude off from reality.

      Mike thanks you.

  2. Gun owner, sure he is. If he is, IF, then he is a classic FUDD.

  3. Methinks the author, Mat Thompson, is a fictitious person. If not, he is not very bright and should not have ever been a gun owner in the first place. He is clearly not emotionally sound.

    1. I wouldn't mind being his friend for a while if he's giving away guns.

    2. I applaud his decision, if in fact he is a real person. It's the same logic (in spite of what ss says) that caused me to become a vegetarian. I don't want to participate in the shabby business of industrial production of animal products for consumption. Similarly, if I were a gun owner, I'd do what he did.
