Seriously, nothing ever seems to happen in Liverpool.

The BBC Website has this story about Rushworths Music Store in Liverpool. The store existed for 174 years until the store closed in 2002.

Of course, the fact that Rushworths was where the Beatles bought their guitars overrides the fact that this store was a symbol of Liverpool's prosperity during the Victorian Era.

The other interesting aspect was the firm's social conscience. Jonathan Rushworth said: "My grandfather believed you couldn't just sell musical instruments, you had to give back to society and be part of the musical life of the city."

Thus the firm set up and sponsored a music festival, which ran for 50 years, and the William Rushworth Memorial Trust still makes grants for the study of music.

But, it's the association with the Beatles that gives Rushworths its fame.

GEORGE HARRISON: Living In The Material World

The big news here is that Martin Scorsese's new documentary about George Harrison premiered in London last night. It seems that it will be on HBO in the States in the next couple of days.

It does sound incredibly interesting though. George was the most talented of the Beatles: followed by John.

Eric Clapton's comment is particularly amusing.

Jaysus, you'd think the only thing that ever came out of this city was the Beatles.

More About the Beatles

I never liked them, not when I was growing up anyway. In the late 60s, when I had my musical awakening, the first groups I did like were the Stones, the Who and the Animals. Later I got into Black Sabbath. The Beatles always seemed too "goodie-goodie" or something.

About ten years ago, in my mid-40s, I started to notice something. Whenever I'd hear an old Beatles' tune, I'd have the most enjoyable nostalgic sensation. I guess I finally outgrew that childhood resistance to the "goodie-goodie" stuff. So, I bought some of their old albums for the first time in my life.

Amazingly, I was familiar with almost every song, actually familiar enough to sing along with the lyrics in the car, which I did plenty. I realized that the Beatles had always been there in the background of my life. It's as if my brain had been absorbing their music all those years. What a pleasure to discover.

Paul McCartney Brings Peace to the Middle East

CNN reports on the upcoming concert of Paul McCartney in Tel Aviv.

After posing for pictures with fans outside the fortress-like church, McCartney was asked to respond to criticism from some Palestinians that his visit to Israel supports its occupation of the West Bank.

He said his visit Wednesday to the West Bank showed he was not playing favorites.

"I'm here to highlight the situation and to say that what we need is peace in this region, a two-state solution," he said, referring to Israel and a Palestinian state.

What occurs to me is, first of all, who could complain about a wish for peace. Did the Palestinians who criticized McCartney not think he was sincere in wishing peace for the reason? Or did they not know he suggests a "two-state solution?" Isn't that the very thing that supports Palestine?

The Insider contains the basic story along with some good pictures of Paul.

What's your opinion?
