Hulk Hogan on Suicide

MSNBC provided a video of Hulk Hogan promoting his new book in which he talks about a near suicide attempt. In his usual eloquent fashion, Hulk describes the divorce after 23 years of marriage and his son's accident for which the boy went to jail for almost killing his passenger, as the major factors which brought him to he point of contemplating suicide with a gun in hand.

The interview reminded me of recent comments by AztecRed. To my several overtures that a suicide attempt is often a mistaken responses to temporary problems and not the true desire of a sound mind, AztecRed had this to say.

It matters not whether they have access to guns or not. If someone really wants to kill themselves, they'll do it.

Of course, the other part of my remarks is that people like this should not have guns. Fortunately Hulk Hogen survived.

By the way, AztecRed runs a wonderful blog of his own with a fascinating name.

Just imagine if he had had a gun! You're right Mike, I'm sorry!

And the Hogan anecdote supports this, and does not support your claim.

Hogan was distraught and depressed. He had a gun, but dis nit use it because HE DID NOT REALLY WANT YO DIE. Mere availability of a firearm didn't escalate his temporary distress into suicide, because the desire to die was not truly there. If it was, he'd have killed himself, with or without a gun.

  3. Yes, this story does not support my claim. It's the exception that proves the rule. Others who do put a bullet in their brain, in some cases were suffering from a fleeting crisis which, had they survived, would have passed.

  4. Right mikeb, and since they had access to a gun, they off'd themselves. If there was no gun, but just knives, rope, chemicals, toasters and bathtubs then they wouldn't have gone through with their desires. That makes a lot of sense.

  5. Reputo, Sorry I wasn't clearer. The guys who put a bullet in their head would probably all or almost all have used other means if no gun was available. But those who use other means are more likely to survive. And those who survive in many cases are glad they did and don't try again.

Evidence please, that this is the exception to the rule.....

And you're saying there arent other extremely effective means of suicide other than by firearm?

I can think of some that are more effective than shooting yourself.
