Facebook Laughing All the Way to the Bank

The Huffington Post reports that the Facebook group which prays for Obama's death has surpassed 1 million members.

The group is called, "DEAR LORD, THIS YEAR YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTOR, PATRICK SWAYZIE. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE ACTRESS, FARAH FAWCETT. YOU TOOK MY FAVORITE SINGER, MICHAEL JACKSON. I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW, MY FAVORITE PRESIDENT IS BARACK OBAMA. AMEN."

Naturally Facebook is reluctant to remove the group, which has led to another group.

Another group, "Petition to remove Facebook group praying for President Obama's death," has been created to denounce the anti-Obama group and advocate for its removal. The group, which has just over 650,000 members, is asking users to "Please act to encourage facebook to remove the page praying for the death of President Obama," and lists three steps Facebook users can take.
What's your opinion? Is this all good 1st Amendment stuff? Do you think it's right for Facebook to allow such blatant Obama-hating on its site? Do you think the animosity towards Bush went this far?

Please leave a comment.

  1. Good stuff to me.

This is actually an off-shoot poking fun at something that actually happened to Republican Governor Chris Christie.

The NJ teachers union sent out a memo exactly like what you see on that facebook page, only it was with Gov. Christie's name rather than Obama's. This is a spoof poking fun at what liberals did to Christie.

Sadly the liberals getting all pissed about the Obama page are too ignorant to know the origins of it began with those on the left calling for the death of Christie. I wrote an entire post on it.

  2. It's not "good" 1st Amendment stuff, but it is 1st Amendment stuff. That's the thing with the 1st Amendment. You have to take the bad with the good.

And it's only been a few years, but you might be forgetting that the animosity toward Bush went pretty far from those of us on the left.

  3. Earl - I seem to recall a movie about Bush's assassination, released while he was still in office.

  4. Mike W - I don't remember that, but I don't doubt it. I do remember an actual sitcom showing him to be a buffoon while he was in his 1st term.

  5. Maybe it is because I live in an extremely liberal area, but I have seen far worse vitriol and hatred towards Bush than Obama. That includes being publicly hung in effigy.

The short lived “That’s my Bush” maybe the show that BE Earl is referring to. I don’t think you can watch an episode of that and make the claim that this type of thing only happens on the right.

  6. There's no question it was pretty bad against Bush too, but in my book, nothing can compare to some of those tea party demonstrations. The truth is though, back in Bush's day, I was still mainly apolitical, I just wasn't watching much.
