Supposedly in the 80's we were against the Nicaraguans because they were Communists.
In the 20's, my grandfather was in the U.S. Navy fighting "Sandinistas" in Nicaragua. He told me that back then, Sandino was not a Communist but was just a peasant fighting Dole Pineapple and The Standard Fruit Company. The Navy was there to protect American and British business interests. He only became a communist later to get support and arms from the Soviets.
