Only in America

Dogster offers the following advice:
Be Safe While Hiking During Hunting Season
by Casey Lomonaco (KPA CTP, APDT), proprietor Rewarding Behaviors Dog Training

It's now hunting season in many areas of the country. To keep your dog safe during hikes in the woods, it is always best to stick to property you know is safe and/or posted.

If you must go hiking in areas where you may run into hunters, both you and your dog should wear bright, non-natural colors. Jackets in fluorescent orange are available for dogs and give visual cues to hunters that your pup is not a deer or turkey!
Yes, and also the humans should wear orange as well so some trigger happy cretin doesn't pop them as well. Don't think that happens? Just google "Hiker shot".

What about people's ability to go hiking in peace without being shot?

"Gun Rights"--what a fucking stupid idea. It's even more idiotic that people can be conned into believing it!

You can do that. That's what they make orange vests and hiking trails for.

  3. Of course, since hunting season is such a large part of every year, that really is a burden on other users of the land. Not only that, but of course, hunting is allowed on every acre in America. . .

Hoplophobia: what a sad condition. It's even more pathetic that the phobic can get others to accomodate their condition.

  4. Sad. Gun rights, but no right to hike in safety. There have been several deaths here in Oregon this year. In some cases the shooter has faced charges, but not in others.

Several cases were of hunters shot by their friends or relatives. Of course, none of them wore orange.

Interestingly, just last year, pro-gun groups opposed a bill to require the wearing of orange by hunters. Now people continue to die. See my post:

  5. The pro-gun crowd have their own definition of freedom. When questioned about how that impacts on others, they fall back on the 2nd Amendment argument.

    Common sense eludes them.

  6. Yeah, it's the time of year when we keep the large dogs inside and the farmers paint the word Cow in bright orange paint on their dairy herds and riding horses.

I don't go outside to do chores without wearing a comfy old bright orange corduroy shirt over whatever else I'm wearing.

Every so often we have people around us who pull a stray bullet or two out of their house, because of unskilled hunters.

  7. Baldr Odinson,

You can't be satisfied with most of the year?

    Mikeb302000,

You can't share the land with other users?

  8. Greg, you can't enroll in a proper militia unit where you can have a drill instrutor reminding you of your lack of a brain?

Then, you don't have a right to "keep and bear arms".

    Live with it.

Rights come with responsibilities--and you aren't showing that you're responsible.

  9. Which article in the Bill Of Rights was "Right To Hike"? I can't remember.

  10. When a hunter shoots another person--a non-hunter--whether that person is properly dressed in blaze orange (not a requirement under any law that I'm aware of) the hunter is at least morally guilty of negligent assault. That the police, prosecutors and courts will not prosecute them is shameful.

AztecRed will, of course, blame the victim if he shoots someone.

Just in the interest of gun safety, many states should look at their hunting laws and think about changing them so that people who are within the range of lethality for typical hunting weapons--when on their own property--will not be endangered by "sound shooters" and other morons with Kapowkapow, shitIthoughtshewasadeer Syndrome (http://bangordailynews.com/2008/11/14/news/bangor/twenty-years-ago-two-shots-rang-out-forever-alteringlives-and-laws/).

But that sort of "commie thinkin" is what gets the idiots like AztecRed up on their ammo boxes. I guess from time to time the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of non-hunters. If nothing else it will keep them fuckin' hikers in their place.

Well I have over 100 guns in my vault right now, so I think I fucking do.

  12. I have a right to drive on a public way without the fear of being killed by a drunk driver. Therefore alcohol should be banned.

The point is that my natural rights are not subject to your neuroses and hoplophobia. Life has risks. Don't like it? Too fucking bad. Grow up.

  13. When the dog barks all the time, no one pays it any attention.

I do have to wonder why it's so hard to agree that for a few weeks out of the year, the land will be used by hunters. Just for a few weeks. During that period, everyone on the land wears orange. Hunters should know what they're shooting at--I'm not arguing that point. My point is that several here seem to think that it's such a burden to have a hunting season.

Victim blaming is the specialty of the anti-gunners.

  15. "You can't share the land with other users?"

But it's not fair. The other users are shooting guns and in effect we're sharing the land with them and the entire range of their guns. How far can one of those deer rifles fire a bullet? That's the radius, you draw the circle.

  16. Mikeb302000,

Deer hunting season here in Arkansas is limited to a few weeks in November and December. Other game seasons run different lengths, but those aren't as popular. The point is that non-hunters get most of the year. Hunters can't even have a few weeks?

Boy, weerd'ybeardy is gettin' pretty cranked up.

So much for his boycotting Mikeb302000. He's just proving that he's a coward, as if we didn't already know, who won't use his blognomen.

And that wearing orange thing is where in the constitution?

You don't even realize how idiotic you look when you say things like that?
