Another Gun Range Suicide in Central Florida

News 4 Jax reports.

Authorities are investigating after a man fatally shot himself in the head at a central Florida gun range.

Orange County deputies said the 45-year-old man arrived at the gun range Friday night and began shooting in the practice lanes. The Orlando Sentinel reports he then shot himself in the head. He later died at the hospital. His name has not been released.

Authorities are investigating whether the shooting was accidental or intentional.
I guess it could have been accidental. But, my bet is it was another of the fairly frequent gun range suicides. I'll bet they're just about as frequent as the guys who get caught trying to take guns on planes in their carry-on.
Remember the mother and son story? That was in central Florida too.

What's your opinion? What's more frequent, gun-range suicides or confiscated guns at the airport?

  1. I'm working hard to understand the point that you want to make here. If I want to kill myself, I'm not going to bother with driving to the range to do it. I can come up with a great many scenarios that make more sense than this one. Of course, the news article left out too many details to draw conclusions. The fact that the man died in a hospital makes this look much more like an accident than an intentional suicide, unless that's just where he was declared dead.

Here's a hint. Crazy people (emotionally distraught, chemically unbalanced, what have you) don't do sensible when they want to stop the pain.

  3. Well said democommie; they don't do sensible and they far too often don't limit the damage to themselves either.

  4. Democommie,

Indeed, but from the report of this event, I can't be sure that this was an intentional suicide. The guy may have just looked down the barrel to see if the thing was loaded. Why would someone go to a range to take a few practice shots before intentionally shooting himself?

Knuckleheads will do harm, regardless of how much regulation we impose. That's life.

  5. Greg Camp:

What, you think people haven't gone to gun ranges to kill themselves? Mikeb302000 has had at least two posts on that sort of shooting, this year. I know of one that happened at an indoor gun range in MA about five or six years (IIRC).

Wrong. There are several "knucklehead" tests we're not using on you guys yet.

  7. Geez, I went agooglin' that "Florida gun range suicide", so's I could find the police report and rub Greg Camp's face in it. And, woodenyaknow, I had a hard time findin' it!

I mean, it was in there on the first page I hit, but it was kinda buried in with like 4 or 5 reports of other suicides/homicides at gun ranges in FL.

  8. Democommie,

So out of the hundred million or there abouts gun owners in America, many of whom use gun ranges for practice, you can find a handful who kill themselves at a range.

Really, that's a rounding error, not a statistic.

  9. Stop trying to figure out people!....its sad to hear that someone would kill themselves..this guy lost his father early this year and his mother a month ago. Dont jugde someone unless you know their story!

  10. Anon, Actually I'm not trying to figure him out as much as I'm trying to blame the rest of you who are responsible for the ease with which anyone can get a gun.
