In California, Woman Injured at Gun Range - Dropped Bullet Discharge

The Sentinal

The Kings County Sheriff’s Office said a 48-year-old woman suffered a bullet wound Sunday following an accident at the Lemoore Sportsman’s Club shooting range.
Maria Ramos was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno after a .22-caliber rim-fire bullet hit the upper portion of her right leg. Deputies say she is currently in stable condition and expected to recover.
When deputies arrived, they learned that Ramos had placed a live .22-caliber bullet onto a table. The bullet reportedly fell off the table and onto the concrete, ultimately causing it to discharge toward the victim’s leg.
Deputies said it appeared that the victim was practicing good gun safety.
Is such a thing even possible? It's a new one on me.  I suppose the woman "was practicing good gun safety" but bad bullet safety.

Georgia Gun Range Idiocy - No One Responsible for the Injuries

A Cleveland woman is recovering at a north Georgia hospital after being shot in the legs. It happened at a gun range in Whitfield County.
The woman's husband was also injured when investigators say a 12-year-old girl dropped a shot gun, causing it to fire.
Whitfield County detectives say a 12-year-old girl was at the range with three adults when she fired an Easter Arms double barrel shotgun.
"When you shoot it, it's got to have somewhere for the energy to go and of course, it comes back on your shoulder," says Josh Land with Discount Sporting Goods.

The recoil was too much. The girl accidentally dropped the gun, causing the other shell to go off in the second barrel.

Land says some 12 year olds can handle a shot gun. "Depending on the caliber, you know, and then how familiar they are with firearms," says Land.

Whitfield County investigators couldn't say how familiar this 12-year-old girl is with guns, but the adults she was with won't likely face charges.

The gun range allows minors to shoot as long as they are with an adult.

Detectives are calling it a freak accident; one that Josh Land isn't sure could have been prevented.

"There may not have been anything to do to prevent that situation," Land says. "You've just always got to be careful."

Iowa Shooting Range Death

The Mahaska County Sheriff's Office received a call around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday stating there was a person on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound at the Hull Shooting Range four miles west of Oskaloosa.
Authorities released the victim’s identity on Thursday.
He was Daniel Eugene Karow, 73, of Oskaloosa.
The sheriff's office says deputies arrived and found Karow semi-concious.
He was taken by ambulance to Mahaska Health Partnership where he died a few hours later as the result of a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Investigators said it appears Karow was unloading a revolver when it went off and struck him.
Just imagine how many stupid things this guy has done with guns during his long life. He may have even injured others or himself in the past. But, since we take such a tolerant view of gun mishaps, guys like this are allowed to continue on their way until they kill themselves or another. It's a tragedy which could be avoided.

Shooting Range Accident - Bumbling Cop Shoots Himself in the Leg

Local news reports

A civilian police officer employed with the United States Marine Corps Support Facility at Blount Island accidentally shot himself Thursday morning while training at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office firing range at 4727 Lannie Road, according to police.
The unidentified federal police officer was putting his handgun in his holster at about 10:55 a.m. when he shot himself in a leg, base deputy commander Jim Hooks said.
“The trigger was pulled and he shot a round through his calf,” Hooks said.
Ahhh, finally we have a proper reporting of a negligent discharge, "he shot himself in a leg."
Now, what was all that nonsense about reporters having to use the passive voice and blame the gun in order to avoid law suits?  Greg insisted on that wild explanation for all the lousy reports we've seen.
Will there be legal ramifications because of this one, Greg?

More on the Missouri Gun Range Shooting Death

A South American woman has died in an apparent accidental shooting at a northeast Missouri gun range.
The Ralls County Sheriff's Department says the shooting happened Sunday at the Salt River Gun Range near New London. Authorities say 25-year-oldAndrea Jinneth Corredor-Rivera of Colombia died at the scene.
Corredor-Rivera died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Ralls County Sheriff Gerry Dinwiddie tells WGEM-TV that the woman was shooting a .500-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun when the strength of the gun's recoil caused her to lose control. She was visiting family in the area.
The sheriff said the gun spun around in her hand, leading to a second fatal shot. No charges are expected in the case.

St. Charles Sportsmen's Club Shooting: 69-Year-Old Man Accidentally Fires Gun, Injures 10

Ten people were injured Tuesday evening when a 69-year-old man accidentally fired a shotgun inside the clubhouse of a members-only suburban Chicago gun club.
The 69-year-old man, a member of the St. Charles Sportsmen's Club, 44W471 Keslinger Road in unincorporated Blackberry Township near Elburn, was putting his 12-gauge shotgun away and loaded what he thought was a snap cap into the gun around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Instead, he had loaded a live round, which was fired after he pulled the trigger toward the floor, the Kane County Chronicle reports.
The buckshot from the round hit the floor and bounced up before it hit several people, including three males -- aged 14, 31 and 60 -- who were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, at least seven others were treated for injuries at the scene of the incident.
The man who fired the gun will likely not be charged in the incident because police believe it to have been an accident, NBC Chicago reports.

Illinois Man Accidentally Kills Himself at the Gun Range

A 49-year-old Riverside man died Tuesday evening after a possible accidental shooting at Midwest Gun Shop in Lyons that afternoon.

Michael Babinsky, 49, of the 300 block of Nuttall Road, was pronounced dead at 5:36 p.m.

The Lyons Police Department responded to the gun shop at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday for a reported shooting and found Babinsky on the first floor of the gun range with a severe head injury.

Lyons Police Commander Brian Kuratko said Wednesday that there was no other shooter involved and that the shooting is being investigated as an accident or misfire.

A misfire? An accident? What the hell are they talking about? He negligently pointed the gun at his head and fired it - allegedly. Why can't they report it like that?

You see, many gun owners are negligent in their gun handling.  It's not that they've never been taught or trained.  It's that these types are impervious to education as well as common sense. They're dangerous to themselves and others.

For whatever reason the press almost always refers to these negligent incidents as accidents. This softens the responsibility of the individual, which is something the gun-rights fanatics just love.

South Dakota Woman Shoots Herself at the Gun Range by Accident

The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s office says a 32-year-old woman shot herself in the ankle with a nine millimeter handgun yesterday afternoon at the Garretson Sportsman’s Club.
Captain Paul Niedringhaus says the woman was performing a move she learned in a self-defense course.  Niedringhaus say the move involves falling and firing from your back.
Niedringhaue says two witness confirm the victim was practicing the manuever when the shooting occured.  Authorities concluded that it was an accidental shooting.  Niedringhaus did not release the woman's name or her condition.  She was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment.
I wonder if she had a concealed carry permit.  I guess it doesn't matter since she's highly unlikely to be charged with a crime.
The gun-rights fanatics think this is normal behavior.  I think it's fantasy-dwelling playacting in which they pretend to kill bad guys. It's driven by a combination of fear and insecurity that I call grandiose victimism.

A man shot in both arms during an accidental shooting at a Bellevue gun range has sued the range and the man who shot him, claiming both failed to take appropriate care.

In a lawsuit filed July 11 against Wade’s Eastside Guns, attorneys for the man contend he was hit in the arms after a bullet fired by another Wade’s customer blew through a divider separating two shooting booths.

According to the lawsuit, the offending customer was firing a Smith & Wesson pistol that was “rather new” to him in a neighboring lane at Wade’s range. As the man raised his arms to shoot, the other customer accidentally fired through the foam lane divider.

The 9 mm bullet struck the man in the right arm, powered through it, then tore through his left arm as well, leaving him seriously injured, according to the lawsuit.

The offending shooter was certainly a lawful gun owner who may have had a concealed carry permit for all we know.  No one checks these things. That's how they keep the stats down in order to make the ridiculous claim that concealed carry permit holders are safer than cops.

The other ridiculous claim they often make, in order to make gun use seem more mainstream, is that there are more and more women involved.  Check the picture.

California Gun Range Negligence Leaves Two Injured

 Local news reports

Mono County Sheriff’s Deputies, Mono County Paramedics, and Bridgeport Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, it was determined that a father, age 57, and son, age 30, both out of county residents, were shooting at the range and had an accidental discharge of a rifle (.223). The bullet from the rifle struck victim one in his right leg. The bullet penetrated both legs and exited through the left foot. Victim two, who was standing next to victim one, sustained shrapnel injuries. Careflight was requested for both the victims.

And here's the genius observation which, of course, downplays the gross negligence involved in ALL  negligent discharges.

With unfortunate and accidental incidents such as this, it’s very important to remember basic firearm safety tips to ensure your own safety and the safety of those around you.

Campus Police Officer Shoots Himself in the Foot - Literally - at the Gun Range

 Local news reports

An Assumption College campus police official accidentally shot himself in the foot this morning while at a shooting range in Holden.

Deputy Chief Keith S. Hough, 55, received a bullet wound to his right foot when his handgun went off as he was placing it in his holster, according to District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.'s office, which investigated the 8 a.m. shooting.

It makes you wonder about the La Pierre theory - the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Gun Range Accident in Maryland - Man Dead

 Local news reports

Charles County investigators believe a Hughesville man died Saturday after accidentally shooting himself with his own handgun at an indoor firing range in Waldorf.

Officers arrived at 9:23 a.m. at the St. Charles Sportsman’s Club at 4045 Renner Road, where they found Patrick Allen Richards, 61, dead from a single gunshot wound to his upper body.

Investigators determined that Richards had gone to the range to shoot his handgun. While there, the gun fired, striking him once in the upper body.
He was definitely a lawful gun owner, another one of the irresponsible ones. But, I wonder if he also had a carry permit. What do you think?

Deputy US Marshall Shoots Himself by Accident on the Gun Range

The Tampa Bay Times reports

A deputy U.S. marshal suffered "minimal injuries" to the upper leg when the officer's gun accidentally went off during training at the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office shooting range Wednesday morning, according to U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Ron Lindbak.

Members of the Marshal's Service, which tracks down fugitives and provides security for federal judges, were at the range at 11700 34th St. N in St. Petersburg to conduct shooting exercises, according to a sheriff's news release. Then a gun went off, causing what the sheriff's office described as a "self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper leg."

Lindbak said the wounded marshal was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but he did not know which hospital.

Neither agency would identify the marshal.

Gun Range Deaths are not All Suicides

Crime Library

Todd Getgen | Attorney Todd Getgen, 42, was taking his custom AR-15 to the range to squeeze of a few rounds. It would be the last thing he ever did. After arriving at a shooting range in Cumberland County, Pa., Getgen was seen by Raymond Peake, 66, a former prison corrections officer intent on overthrowing the US government. According to ABC 27, Peake coveted Getgen’s rifle. So Peake murdered Getgen at the shooting range, filling him with so many bullet fragments that the coroner who conducted his autopsy was unable to list the injuries in sequence. Until pleading no contest and receiving a life sentence, Peake had claimed that Getgen was already dead when he arrived at the gun range – Peake claimed that he was only taking Getgen’s rifle in order to help arm an insurrectionary group committed to rising up against the government.
The site highlights 5 deaths including three murders. Using Google, it took about ten seconds to see that murders at gun ranges are not unheard of, like our commenter said on the other thread. He actually said it as if he'd done an exhaustive search and come up empty.

Why do gun rights folks so often think they can say anything they want and be believed? I think they actually believe they're in a battle with the gun control side and all's fair. But it makes it very hard to believe anything else they have to say, don't you think?

Ex-Navy Seal, Author of American Sniper, Chris Kyle, Murdered on Gun Range

Yahoo News reports

Former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle was fatally shot along with another man Saturday on a Texas gun range, a sheriff told local newspapers.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Kyle, 38, and a second man were found dead at Rough Creek Lodge's shooting range west of Glen Rose, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.
