Campus Police Officer Shoots Himself in the Foot - Literally - at the Gun Range

 Local news reports

An Assumption College campus police official accidentally shot himself in the foot this morning while at a shooting range in Holden.

Deputy Chief Keith S. Hough, 55, received a bullet wound to his right foot when his handgun went off as he was placing it in his holster, according to District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.'s office, which investigated the 8 a.m. shooting.

It makes you wonder about the La Pierre theory - the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

  1. People are human Mike. Even the police officers you feel should be determining whether regular folk have a good enough reason to own or carry a firearm.
My guess is he violated safety rule #2. Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. Likely had his finger in the trigger when he holstered.
He likely wont forget that lesson. I am a bit suprised you arent asking why no one has been charged or arrested in this accident.

    1. Well, I haven't changed my mind about what should happen to gun owners who do things like this - even cops.

  2. This changes nothing about LaPierre's statement. He didn't claim that the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a perfect guy with a gun. He didn't take the absurd position that gun control freaks take that only perfect people may be armed.

When human beings are involved, accidents and negligence will happen. But the record of gun owners of all types is clear. The percentage of unintended injuries and deaths is exceedingly tiny. You've seen the numbers. I've challenged you before to show any group whose safety record is better than 99%.

    1. You've twisted the argument in order to claim a 99% safe rating. The truth is not quite that good. The incompetent and irresponsible "good guys" are too many. The reason is simple. The requirements for being a "good guy with a gun" are too slack.

    2. I've twisted the argument with facts and logic, you mean. Take the number of accidents of all kinds and divide that by the number of gun owners. Tell me what percentage you get.

  3. Even Obama is buying into LaPierre's theory with his decision to arm the Syrian rebels.

Perhaps it makes you wonder about that "theory," but the "logic" behind such doubt seems so far to be in dire need of explanation.

What about this incident indicates that something other than a good guy with a gun is useful for stopping a bad buy with a gun?

Is it your contention that we should count on the bad guy with the gun shooting himself in the foot, and that, furthermore, a foot wound will stop him?

That seems a rather thin reed to which to cling, don't you think, Mikeb?

    1. I don't know what the hell you're jabbering about, Kurt, other than to get a couple back-handed insults in there.

The point of the post is that too many good guys with guns are incompetent and irresponsible. We should raise the bar on who can own and operate firearms.

    2. Define too many. You throw that term around, but I want to see it quantified.
