Unintentional but Preventable Child Deaths

  1. Not sure which one to comment on.
The gun loons that comment here regularly fight against simple regulations that could save children's lives and are not an infringement on their 2nd amendment rights. Not to mention the idiot gun owners that allow children access to their weapons. My parents and their friends all owned guns, but they didn't bring them to the family picnic and leave them loaded on the picnic table where a child could pick them up and kill grandpa. With all the other deadly scenarios we read about on your blog that ends up with a dead child, these people are to stupid to own a gun. Now wait for SS to tell us they count the dead children wrong, so there really aren't that many children killed by guns.

    1. Actually they got it right Anon. Maybe they found someone to proofread their stuff. As for keeping firearms from children, I have pretty exacting standards in that area and have often commented on it.
My home state has a child access law that doesn't burden gun rights, and I secure my firearms in a way that insures they are only accessable to me, yet available if needed. It aint rocket science.

    2. I guess that's why hundreds of children get killed every year and you follow the idiocy of the NRA.

"•Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons.
Many factors must be considered when deciding where and how to store guns. A person's particular situation will be a major part of the consideration. Dozens of gun storage devices, as well as locking devices that attach directly to the gun, are available. However, mechanical locking devices, like the mechanical safeties built into guns, can fail and should not be used as a substitute for safe gun handling and the observance of all gun safety rules."

    4. The stories are daily about some child getting a hold of the parents gun and killing themselves, or someone else. This BS is the best response you have? Some politicians BS about minutia that doesn't explain the negligence. A typical gun loon response.

    5. ss has strict personal standards, but unfortunately many other gun owners do not. That's why we need strict safe storage laws, and I don't mean just childproofing, I mean proper gun safes. This would save many child deaths as well as prevent many gun thefts. I base that conclusion on the theory that most gun owners, even those who are sloppy and stupid in their storage of guns, are basically law abiding and would obey such a law if it were enacted.

    6. Strict personal standards? He has no problem intentionally lying about me multiple times. The kind of standards I expect from gun loons.

    7. I guess that convoluted answer means you are against gun safe storage. Thanks for clearing that up SS.

    8. I don't see how my answer is convoluted. You suggested that the NRA doesn't believe in safe storage and I showed you were wrong. I've often mentioned my own standards about firearms around children.

    9. As I said, you may have proper personal standards about safe storage, but the NRA plays only lip service to it. What we need is mandatory safe storage laws. I can't believe you won't agree that they would save lives. I think you're being less than forthcoming about this.

    10. Yes, and you also told me you don't belong to, or agree with what the NRA says on many issues, but here you are citing them.

    11. Anon, I cited the NRA because your comment directly mentioned them.

    12. If the NRA believed in safe storage they would act on it and promote it to their members like any other issue they push. A poor citation by you.

    13. The NRA has a long history of promoting safe and responsible gun use and storage.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has also done outstanding work in educating and facilitating safe storage of firearms.

    14. Lip service, nothing more. If they really believed in it they'd use their lobbying power to push for proper legislation.

  2. "NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Project ChildSafe, in partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), announces the second annual S.A.F.E Summer campaign, a part of Project ChildSafe's ongoing program to emphasize the importance of responsible firearm storage -- particularly while children are home from school and more likely to be unattended."

"NSSF launched Project ChildSafe in 1999 (prior to 2003 the program was called Project HomeSafe) as a nationwide initiative to promote firearms responsibility and provide safety education to all gun owners. Through partnerships with more than 15,000 law enforcement agencies, the program has provided more than 36 million free firearm safety kits to gun owners in all 50 states and five U.S. territories. That's in addition to the more than 70 million free locking devices manufacturers have included with new firearms sold since 1998 and continue to do today. Project ChildSafe was originally supported by federal grants provided by the U.S. Department of Justice. Since 2008, when this funding was cut, the firearms manufacturing industry has solely funded the Project ChildSafe program through the members of NSSF. "

    1. More lip service. Everyone knows that most people will take the easier route and live in the delusion that nothing bad will ever happen to them. This is evidenced by the daily child shootings we see and the half-a-million guns that are stolen each year, mainly for private homes where no safe exists.
