Louisiana Man Killed in Accidental Shooting - Shooter Arrested Immediately

Advocate staff photo by HILARY SCHEINUK -- Two people console one another on the scene of a shooting death under investigation by Baton Rouge police the morning of Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015 at 4965 Jefferson Avenue near N. Foster Drive.

Local news

A 20-year-old man was accidentally killed on Saturday afternoon when he and an acquaintance were looking at a gun in a Baton Rouge home’s storage room, according to police.
The two men were in a home in the 4900 block of Jefferson Avenue when the gun went off about 12:30 p.m., said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman. A single bullet struck Demarcus Rheams in the chest, and he died at the scene, according to McKneely.
Jawan Billy, 19, was holding the gun when it was fired, McKneely said. Billy remained at the scene and was detained for questioning, McKneely said.
“They didn’t have problems before,” McKneely added of the two men. “It wasn’t purposely done.”
Billy was booked Saturday into Parish Prison on counts of negligent homicide and illegal use of a stolen weapon.

  1. "Dangerous and lawful gun owners", huh? So the gun was lawfully stolen?

Apparently--we are in Mikeb Land, after all, and the laws are pretty wacky around here.

Also, of course, we don't know who the gun owner is--only the possessor of the stolen property.

    2. The dangerous lawful gun owner was the last legitimate owner of the gun. I suppose he may have been victim of a master safe-cracker, but most likely he had the gun in his night stand or under his pillow. The failure to safely store the gun allowed it to be stolen. Get it?

Why, because I believe it should be required that you gun owners lock your guns up at home? Why, because I think a half-a-million guns stolen each and every year is too much?

    7. Why, because I believe it should be required that you gun owners lock your guns up at home?

Yep. I'd cut you some slack if you'd count locking the doors of one's home as having "lock[d] [one's] guns up at home," but I'm pretty sure that's not enough for a control fanatic like you.

Why, because I think a half-a-million guns stolen each and every year is too much?

I'm actually willing to agree about that being too many guns stolen. I think the thieves should stop their evil deprivation of other people's means of defending their lives and liberty.

    8. Yeah, and I think you gun owners should be constrained by law to lock you guns up at home. Lives would be saved.

I "lock up [my] guns at home" when I lock my doors. That has been a 100% death-free policy for me.

Say . . . wait a second. Is that your way of saying that you think locking guns up should be voluntary? Breakthrough!
