  1. How about this design?

Now if I'd said that, I'd wager that Mikeb would be accusing me of "jingoism."

    2. If you'd said it I might have said that, but I recognized Flying Junior's comment to be facetious. He's definitely not one I'd think of as a flag waver.

      If you say so.

    5. There you go Kurt. A PERFECT example of how those of the same feather protect each other. Cops protecting cops, liberals protecting liberals, and anti gunners protecting anti gunners, and so on.

Mike, with the things FJ has said in the past, I would have put him squarely in the flag wavers corner.

  3. Actually, other than the now defunct CCCP landing a couple of probes on Venus in the early 1960s and sending probes and landers to Mars in the early 1970s, the only nation that has done any serious space exploration is the U.S.A. Whose flag is it on the moon? Who drove a dune buggie on the moon forty years ago? Who sent two generations of rovers to the surface of Mars? Who sent two spacecraft outside of the solar system, a journey that took forty years?

The ISS is a wonderful thing. And I love all of the cooperation with Japan, Canada, Europe, Russia and others. However, it was our workhorse, the space shuttle, that carried all of the major structures into space over a ten year period.

    1. See there Mike? Thank you FJ for the point. Are you going to call FJ guilty of jingoism now?

And by the way, FJ is 100% right. And America has every right to wave that flag as well as FJ to celebrate those wonderful accomplishments.

    2. But when you really think about it... There is no life outside of Earth in our own Solar System. What have we accomplished as far as reaching other humanoid species, other exoplanets, in whatever galaxy or star system? If we ever have a pen pal in the next star system, what would be our chances of getting together? A federation of planets? Stars?

We have a space station that orbits our own planet. We have probed, photographed and spectographed other planets in our own solar system. We have sent the Voyager spacecraft a few light seconds out of our own system. We have no need for a planetary flag that I can discern.

    3. Nah, maybe no need for a planetary flag. But it's something to have fun thinking about. It may be a foolish daydream today that prepares for tomorrow's future. Look at all the"trekkie" stuff we have today that was the fantasies of decades past.

    4. Major, I wouldn't ever accuse FJ of being guilty of jingoism. I agree with all that he said about the US. But, when I call someone jingoistic it involves much more than recognizing what's good about The States. It usually involves policing the world and lauding American intervention all over the globe. It contains a complete lack of recognizing the things that are wrong. FJ has a pretty good eye for all those things.

Except that you also apply that term to those of us who favor a very non-interventionist foreign policy, rather than the continuance of the Bush/Obama "cops of the world" doctrine, and who loudly and vigorously condemn inexcusable failings in America, such as the draconian gun laws.

    6. Your good at back tracking Mike seeing as you said you would accuse Kurt of jingoism for the same comment. Then said FJ was just being facetious when to me clearly isn't, now or in his past comments. Some of which I have found quite inspiring and so have you as long as he was saying it. Not someone else saying the exact same thing.

    7. Kurt, Have I really accused you of jingoism? I'd be curious to see the context of that becasue now that I think about it, you're not.

Um--yeah. In a reply clearly directed at me:

And it would be contrary to your usual jingoism to argue that they are.

      So, Mikeb--how 'bout that "context"?
