Gunners Playing at Show and Tell:
Details of the Skyway Washington Mass Shooting

That Led to the Mt. Rainier Ranger's Death

Nothing says New Year's Eve celebration among one's fellow gun nuts like a little light shooting of one's fellow revelers.   Or do any of you want to try to claim these were not all 'pro-gunners', gun nuts, 2nd Amendment rights fanatics.....who happened to be irresponsible and dangerous?  Some of them ARE on the 'more guns' side of the issue, clearly.

Emphasis in bold type near the end of the article is my addition - DG.

UPDATED: New details released in Skyway shooting

Post by Stacey Mulick / The News Tribune on Jan. 3, 2012 at 2:08 pm
UPDATED at 2:30 p.m.
King County sheriff’s investigators had been trying to get Benjamin C. Barnes to turn himself in in connection with a shooting in Skyway early Sunday that left four injured.
Instead, the 24-year-old Barnes went to Mount Rainier, where investigators believe he shot and killed law enforcement ranger Margaret Anderson. After a massive manhunt, Barnes was found dead Monday in Paradise Creek.
The investigation into the Skyway shooting and Anderson’s death were continuing today.
The King County Sheriff’s Office released more details about the Skyway shooting and Barnes connection to the incident.
According to a press release, nine people were hanging out inside a home in the 6200 block of South 117th Place on New Year’s Eve.
“During the evening, there was a ‘show and tell’ of guns and at midnight, at least two people fired multiple rounds into the air,” the press release states.
Nearly three hours later, one of the men at the party asked to see a gun that belonged to another person.
The man looked at the gun, then refused to give it back when asked, the press release states.
“A fight ensued and, at one point, at least two people pulled guns and a shootout ensued,” the press release states.
Four people were injured. Witnesses said Barnes was one of the gunman who fired. Barnes and two others left the house.
Detectives located the two others who’d left the house and were working with Barnes’ family members “to convince him to come to the police to tell his side of the story,” the press release states.
Detectives have not talked to the victims.
“It is unclear at this point who shot first and who was shot by whom,” the press release states.
Of the four shooting victims, two remain in critical condition. The other two are in stable condition.

Update on the Ortega Presidential Assassination Attempt

We would all be a lot safer if crazy people did not obtain firearms.  It is ludicrous to have to wait until they do something potentially dangerous before they are prevented from gun access.  Not everyone, clearly, who has a mental health problem is mentally ill or unfit, but we have a chronic problem with people like this getting their hands on guns.

It is unacceptable, it is intolerable.  It has to stop.

Accused White House shooter to be held for trial

Man is charged with attempting to assassinate President Barack Obama

updated 12/19/2011 3:51:23 PM ET
A man accused of trying to kill President Barack Obama by firing several shots at the White House from long range must remain in custody to protect the public and the president, a federal judge said Monday.
U.S. Magistrate Judge John Facciola's order that Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez be detained without bond was not unexpected given the seriousness of the charge Ortega faces — attempting to assassinate the president. It followed a two-hour hearing in which Ortega's public defender aggressively questioned an FBI agent about the strength of the government's case and apparent contradictions in witness statements.
Obama and his wife, Michelle, were out of town on the evening of Nov. 11 when authorities say Ortega used an assault rifle with an attached scope to fire up to a dozen shots at the White House from his vehicle. Two bullets and one bullet fragment were recovered from the grounds of executive mansion, including one that was stopped by bulletproof glass. Investigators found five bullet impact points on the south side of the building on or above the second story, where the first family resides.
Friends and associates told investigators that Ortega — a 21-year-old Idaho Falls, Idaho native — has long been obsessed with Obama and referred to the president as the antichrist. Ortega, who has shoulder-length dark hair and a long beard, called himself "the modern-day Jesus Christ" and told at least one person he intended to kill the president, authorities allege.
Ortega's attorney, David Bos, argued that prosecutors had failed to establish that Ortega was present when the shots were fired or that the president was the target of the attack.
"We believe this to be an extraordinarily weak government case," Bos said.
Prosecutors have raised concerns about Ortega's mental state, although an initial psychiatric screening found him competent to stand trial.
"The defendant is a particularly dangerous individual," Facciola said, adding that he could not set any conditions for release that would ensure public safety.
Ortega faces a possible life sentence if convicted, and he would be a flight risk if released, Facciola said.
He noted that Ortega's departure from the Washington area after the shooting was "a remarkable one, on a freight train."
Prosecutors introduced a photo of Ortega's head popping out of an empty rail car that was snapped by a retired FBI photographer who takes pictures of trains as a hobby. The picture was taken three days after the shooting near Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., and the train had originated in Washington. Ortega was arrested on Nov. 16 at a hotel in Indiana, Pa., where he had stayed with friends before the shooting.
Two witnesses told investigators that they heard gunshots or popping sounds and saw a dark-colored sedan on Constitution Avenue south of the White House on the evening of Nov. 11. But neither of them identified Ortega as the shooter, FBI Special Agent Michael Pinto said under cross-examination.
A jogger who flagged down police immediately after the shooting gave "a vastly different version of events," Bos said, telling investigators that the shooting involved two vehicles, including a yellow truck.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Borchert said the government had substantial evidence linking Ortega to the shooting. He also said there's no evidence to substantiate Ortega's claim to investigators that he was carjacked on the afternoon before the attack.
"It's his car. It's his gun. It's his bullets," Borchert said. "There's a compelling case of identification here."
