The chief of the Crossville Police Dept. says a 7-year-old boy found shot inside a car in a parking lot Monday has died.

Officers say four children had been left in the car while their mother and step-father were inside the building a short distance away, paying a bill. The mother also left her purse with a loaded semi-automatic pistol inside.

Police say the boy's 8-year-old brother tried to unload the weapon by removing the magazine when the gun discharged, "accidentally" fired, hitting the 7-year-old boy in the head.

The boy was flown to UT Medical Center's trauma center for treatment, where he died.

Authorities say the incident appears to be an accident. The family is from the Sparta-area, in White County.

The chief of police says they will turn their findings over to the district attorney general. The Department of Children's Services is also working on the case.

Louisville Kentucky Bar Fight Leads to Accidental Shooting

Police say a large bar fight spilled into the street early Sunday morning, resulting in an accidental shooting which sent a man to the hospital.

Alicia Smiley, a spokeswoman for the Louisville Metro Police Department, said a man was thrown through a window during a brawl at Happy Endings bar on 4th Street. He went to his car to get a gun, Smiley said, which went off accidentally when he was hit in the head.

The bullet struck a man in a nearby car, who was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

Florida Judge: Schools Can Ban Guns from Dormatories

Universities are justified in banning guns in residence halls, a judge has ruled in a case that challenged the University of Florida's policy.

The gun-rights group Florida Carry Inc., which has filed suit against several universities and municipalities, argued in a suit filed in January that the state law making it legal to possess a firearm at home trumped another that bans weapons on school property.

But Alachua County Circuit Judge Toby Monaco entered a summary judgment on Wednesday stating that UF and President Bernie Machen were not violating Florida law by recognizing the Legislature's prohibition against guns in housing on university property.

Florida Carry last year won a decision by the 1st District Court of Appeal asserting that the Legislature has sole jurisdiction for gun policy, and universities could not ban weapons stored in vehicles.

“Unlike the right to have a firearm in a vehicle, the Legislature's recognition of a person's right to possess a firearm in a home does not extend to a residence hall on a university campus,” Monaco said in this week's order. “There is no exception in (state law) for a residence hall like there is for a vehicle.”

The university released a statement saying it was pleased with the ruling.

“The University of Florida fully complies with Florida law that allows individuals 18 years or older to store their guns securely in vehicles while on campus, as determined by a 1st DCA decision last year, and the university will continue to do so,” the statement said. “Florida law otherwise bans guns on university, college and K-12 campuses and at their events, with limited exceptions such as for law enforcement.”

Another Law Abiding Gun Owner leaves an AR-15 in their car

It seems to me that most crime guns are reported as being "stolen" for their method of entering the illegal arms stream, people would want to take better care of their assault rifles.  On the other hand, they are great for shooting kindergardners and cinema goers and not much else.

So, why not leave it in your car, especially if you are a pro-gun activist.  We need more headlines like this one from the Salt Lake Tribune:

Washington Lawful and Responsible Gun Owner Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Parking Lot of the Pub

Just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, an older man was accidentally shot in the thigh in the parking lot of Elmer’s Pub, located at 15027 Ambaum Blvd SW in Burien.

When deputies arrived they found a 66-year old Burien man inside the pub with a gunshot wound to his upper leg.

Apparently the man had been outside smoking with a friend when the topic of guns came up.

He then pulled a gun out of his car and accidentally shot himself.
