Justin Felty planned to go to a concert at the Bourbon Theatre and went to his best friend's apartment to hang out beforehand, said family friend Benjamin Cosier.

Former Northeast High School classmate Brannen Faulkner was showing Felty the handgun he had just purchased when he accidentally fired it in his apartment near 50th and R streets about 7:30 Friday evening, Lincoln police said. The shot hit Felty in the chest.

Justin Felty recently was discharged from the U.S. Army and was an artillery specialist at Fort Hood, his father said.

“He knew how to use a gun. That’s what makes this so hard.”

He said his son loved to tell jokes and spend time with his friends.

Justin Felty introduced his firearms hobby to Faulkner, 22, after he returned to Lincoln from the army, his dad said.

The two were like brothers, and Jeffrey Felty said his family has no ill feelings toward Faulkner.

“I’m not going to forgive him because there’s nothing to forgive,” he said. “It was a total accident.”

Faulkner bought the gun legally just hours before the accidental shooting and may not have known how to use it, police Capt. David Beggs said Friday evening

A 19-year-old refugee will spend at least the next three years in prison for accidentally shooting a 17-year-old in the back, paralyzing her.

Lancaster County District Court Judge Jodi Nelson gave Sabri S. Ibrahim a 6- to 10-year sentence Thursday for shooting Treneyce R. Thompson, now 18, on June 19.

With good time, he’ll finish his sentence in three years.

Ibrahim was trying to buy the gun from 20-year-old Deavonni Galloway and was checking it out in the back seat of Galloway’s car when the gun went off.

The bullet blasted through the front passenger seat and tore into Thompson’s back.

“I’m sorry. My heart cries out to Treneyce,” Ibrahim told Nelson in court on Thursday. “It was an accident.”

Defense attorney Carlos Monzon asked Nelson to give Ibrahim a 1 1/2- to 3- year sentence to run with time he was already doing on a drug charge.

“Mr. Ibrahim never had the intent to cause harm to anybody,” Monzon said. “He probably didn’t even mean to shoot that gun.

“This is a case about an accident.”

Yes and no, Judge Nelson countered. True, Ibrahim probably didn’t mean to shoot a gun and hurt Thompson. But he did try to buy a gun illegally while out on bond from the drug charges, and undoubtedly, she said, he was going to do something “sinister” with it.

Wow, that sounds like the judge punished the guy for things he hasn't done yet, possible future crimes.

Is that right? Can he do that?

Nebraska Trailer Dweller Arrested for Accidental Shooting of Neighbor

A rural Columbus man has been charged with third-degree assault after accidentally shooting his neighbor late Thursday night.

According to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Trent Kowalski was conducting target practice inside his Collegeview Trailer Park residence around 10:45 p.m. Thursday when the accident occurred.

The sheriff’s office says Kowalski was shooting a .22-caliber rifle inside his home at 6034 55th St. No. 545 when a bullet exited the residence and struck 57-year-old Mark Foxvog in the leg.

Kowalski was arrested and taken to the Platte County Detention Facility, where he was still being held Saturday morning. No bond had been set.

The sheriff’s office and Nebraska State Patrol responded to the shooting, which is still under investigation.

I wonder why he was taken to jail immediately and not AFTER a lengthy investigation?

Nebraska 6-Year-old Dead in Accidental Shooting - No Details

A northeast Nebraska family is mourning the death of a 6-year-old boy killed in an accidental shooting.

Madison County Attorney Joe Smith says the boy died around noon on Saturday. The shooting happened at the family's home in a rural area near Battle Creek.Smith says he won't release the circumstances of the shooting, but he called it a sad tragedy.Smith says the boy's name won't be released, and he considers his investigation closed.

That's another trick they use, release no details.  This is how gun nut police and gun nut prosecutors protect gun nut parents from unnecessary charges.  It was only an accident after all, and haven't they suffered enough already?
