The Media

Laci wrote a wonderful post about the media in the U.S. After examining a few examples, Laci's conclusion is summed up like this.

Seriously, the US needs a public media outlet otherwise it is indeed “500 channels and nothing’s on”.

Do you think it's right to accuse the U.S. media of being either biased or irresponsible?

  1. PBS is boring. I don't feel like contributing so I can watch Celtic Woman and Sesame Street. If I want to see a four hour dissertation on Appalachia, I'll drive down to the local Wal-Mart.

Do they really think the public is going to donate to watch them take cookies away from the Cookie Monster?

Far superior educational programming on the Discovery channels, History Channel, etc.

  2. I wish I could find the clip of Alf Garnett talking about the BBC's making people think.

Maybe Discovery UK (e.g., Time Team), but the US media is truly dumbed down (Not that FWB would notice) including PBS. The US programmes on the channels FWB gives one a taste, but it isn't satisfying.

(BTW, PBS's remake of Time Team really sucks. Maybe it's because I like Tony Robinson. And I live in hope that Phil Harding will break into the Wurzels' "Combine Harvester")
