The problem is that gun ownership is not recognized as a human right, while reproduction is a right (and in many cases a duty) subject only to the authority of the governing state. Your argument lacks validity.
I'm occasionally accused of unwillingness to compromise. I know, I know--weird, isn't it?
But just to prove that I am willing to compromise, to even those who have so far been unable to comprehend how reasonable I am, I propose that we abolish mandated waiting periods for both the slaying of inconvenient unborn children, and the acquisition of life and liberty preserving firepower.
To what public good does it serve to inconvenience the buyers of a particular good or service? Firearms are typically expensive, and abortions both expensive and painful, so what exactly do you seek to achieve by discriminating against potential customers if they already have the will to buy a gun or terminate a pregnancy?
Conversely, a short waiting period for first-time handgun buyers (in jurisdictions that do not require a licence to buy a handgun) would seem to be an acceptable infringement of human rights, given that FFL dealers are in business to earn a living, and may overlook a potentially dangerous buyer.
Explain to me in your infinite wisdom, Mikeb, how that is supposed to work if more women vote then men? There are more women than men, women are more likley to take the time to vote, and are less likley to be disqualified from voting (due to criminal convictions) than men.
It is also intolerant against women to promote the stereotype that women somehow cannot enjoy the use and protection of firearms.
Mikeb, women make up a slim majority of the population. If they decided to vote together, they'd pick the winner in every election.
But do you realize that many women oppose abortion, while many men support it? Besides, guns are not a right for men only. Gun rights are for all human beings. You're the one who continually tries to divide people up by race and sex and make declarations about the characters of each. That's racist and sexist.
And don't be slippery. Pythia said that you promote the stereotype, not that you are trying to ban women from having guns.
Abortion is a liberal vs. conservative issue, not women vs. men. The polls don’t show much difference between men and women. The hardline pro-life no exceptions position actually favors women slightly.
What do you think goes on, Mike? When a young irresponsible woman gets knocked up by a young irresponsible man after a night of debauchery, does the man say “you’re having that baby so I can pay child support for the next 18 years”, or “let me get my keys and drive you to the clinic”?
As I said on the HuffnPuff, rights shouldn't have waiting periods.

DeleteJadegold/E.N./whatever, I don't care what you recognize. You're not in charge and never will be.
DeleteIt is a wise and prudent thing to wait, stop and think before you stop a beating heart.

What are your veiws on capital punishment or the "legality" of individual self defense? Are you consistent?
DeleteWell, there's definitely plenty of waiting, thinking, and appealing in the Capitol punishment process. In self-defense, there's no time to wait.

ReplyDeleteOk, I get it. Waiting periods are bad, we should scrap them all.
ReplyDeleteOr is this trying to say waiting periods imposed by the left are good, and waiting periods imposed by the right are bad?

The reason it's so lopsided is that abortion rights are a women's issue while gun rights are a men's issue.
ReplyDeleteMen would never stand for this if it were reversed.

I'm not sure what you mean by more women vote. Do women make up a majority of the policy-makers in Washington?
DeleteWhere did I say women cannot have guns?
When you can't cry "racism", cry "sexism".
