Maine Man Who Sent Son to Day Care with Loaded Gun Gets a Slap on the Wrist

The father of a 4-year-old who brought a loaded handgun to day care in Maine has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor reckless conduct, claiming the incident was unintentional.
The man, 31-year old Adam Keene, of Madison, placed the loaded, semi-automatic .380 caliber pistol in his son's day care bag when bringing it into his house and then forgot he had done so, said Kennebec County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney.
The gun, which Keene legally owned, had a round in the chamber and the safety activated.
The gun was later discovered by an employee of the child's preschool day care in the rural central Maine community of Hallowell, near the state's capital of Augusta.
Maloney said she chose not to pursue felony charges because she believed the incident was an accident. She said in a phone interview that the state had extended a plea offer to Keene, who has not yet responded to it.
"If I thought that he'd intended to have the gun go to day care, this would be a very different case," said Maloney. "But I'm optimistic we'll be able to come to some common ground."
You see how they do it?  You see how gun-lovin' prosecutors allow gun-lovin' criminals to continue doing their thing?
Firearm misbehavior should be taken more seriously than this?

  1. " You see how gun-lovin' prosecutors allow gun-lovin' criminals to continue doing their thing?"

Maloney is a gun loving Democratic prosecutor, something you don't see every day. Of course, if the citizens of the county feel her office is being too soft on prosecuting crimes, then they have the option of electing someone else.

  2. Prosecutors are rarely noted for their willingness to forgive criminals. On the other hand, since they frequently are busy punishing real crimes and drug crimes, they don't have time to go after every little thing you want dealt with.

    1. "Every little think" like sending a 4-year-old to school with a gun?

    2. Most prosecutors I've dealt with would say, "Oh, it was an accident? Right. Here's your deal. No, we'll not go below a felony, but we are willing to cut your jail time to a year or less so that we have room for all these drug criminals."

And, indeed, this may be just such a deal if you keep following the case. The prosecutor may think that, since the guy seems to have done this on accident and be horrified about it, he won't make the most photogenic person to get her bones on in a high profile trial, so she'll offer a standard deal with some felony charge and very little jail time.

But go ahead, keep on telling us how prosecutors nationwide conspire to let gun criminals off the hook. Keep proclaiming your own ignorance and willful stupidity.

  3. We wouldn't want to actually, you know, hold the gun owner responsible for nearly killing the boy or the other kids in the class. No harm no foul, right? Let 'im keep his gunzzz so he can do it again. That's 'murika for ya.

    1. Um, no one was shot, and the gun didn't fire. Of course, you're the one who thinks he was a victim of gun violence because he saw a gun in a fight a ways off, right?

Geez, when did America acquire so many wussies?
