  1. come on law enforcement , the Southern Poverty Law Center has been warning about these right wing nuts for years, how many cops have to be killed by sovereigns , survivalists, skin heads, and militia types for you to wake up

    1. The problem is there are millions of them.

    2. And what is it you expect cops to do about these people? And on what basis? Denying guns based on wacky political opinions? Doing something more?

    3. And for clarity, by these people I mean the "right wing nuts" Anonymous is worried about, not the clear criminals like the fugitive in this post who needs to be caught and prosecuted under existing law. What are you wanting them to wake up and do about the ones who aren't committing crimes?

    4. The problem of having millions of these cop-hating, government-hating lunatics in the country as well as many millions of other unfit individuals is a serious one. The solution is in a comprehensive and serious gun control regimen combined with a strict one strike you're out policy.

    5. So you're good with political screening--"I'm sorry sir, I don't like your politics, so I'm going to deny your permit."

Does this apply to everyone SPLC doesn't like? I'm sorry, but you belong to a church that teaches that homosexuality (along with any type of sex other than husband and wife) is a sin--no permit for you based on your politically incorrect religious beliefs. Oh, and same for you down there--yeah, I hear you going on about the 4th Amendment you Constitution fanatic!

Or is this broad discretion so that conservative sheriffs can only give Republicans permits and liberals can only give them to connected Democrats?

    6. When nut jobs call for the violent overthrow of the government, maybe they should not be able to get a gun. That's not the same as saying abortion, or homosexuality is a sin, unless of course, they call for the death of abortion doctors and homosexuals, as many do.

    7. Anonymous,
I agree, there is a big difference between saying abortion or homosexuality are sins and calling for the deaths of doctors and gays. The reason for my question is that you cited SPLC and their warnings about dangerous extremists. I'm not a regular reader of their posts and warnings, but whenever I have read through their descriptions of extremist groups, I've seen lots of broad strokes and precious little in the way of differentiating between these two categories. Instead, I see things like lumping the Family Resource Center in as a hate group along with the KKK.

That bizarre comment was in response to this by me: "The solution is in a comprehensive and serious gun control regimen combined with a strict one strike you're out policy."

    9. Anonymous brought up a specific subset of people--right wingers and anarchists pointed out as problems by SPLC, and you agreed that there were millions of these people and they were a problem. When I asked you what your proposal was for this specific group that you agreed was a problem, you said "my comprehensive system of laws."

The thing is, unless the people doing the may issue permitting under your proposal start denying permits on the basis of people holding the views the first Anonymous brought up, there's no guarantee that you'll disarm these "millions" you see as a problem.

So, either you favor political screening of permits, or you don't because you don't truly consider every person who holds those views to be a problem.

    10. My idea of proper gun control laws encompasses a lot more than may-issue gun licensing. The overall and comprehensive program would choke the flow of guns into the criminal world, mainly due to safe storage requirements and universal background checks.

Even more importantly, the one strike you're out enforcement would disarm many of the unfit gun owners who are now wreaking havoc.

None of this would directly disarm members of hate groups, at least not for their political affiliations. But it would gradually remove guns from the unfit.

  2. Yet more officers are killed in the line of duty in traffic accidents than are killed at the hands of a deranged right-wing gunman.
