Georgia Man Charged with Murder

Detray Shivers

The New York Daily News

The tragic shooting death of a 2-year-old Georgia boy, once thought accidental, was actually a murder, police said.

Detray Shiver, 25, had been charged with shooting and killed his nephew, little Kamarri Lewis, on Monday morning in Stone Mountain, Ga. His wife, Alexia Thomas, 23, is accused of dumping the handgun into a sewer drain outside the Dekalb County home.

The aunt and uncle were already jailed on neglect charges after they first told police the child found the pistol and shot himself around 10 a.m. Monday. The couple was meant to be watching the boy while his mother was at work, but Shiver claimed he wasn’t home at the time of the shooting, while Thomas told cops she was asleep.

But an autopsy found the boy could not have shot himself and was ruled a homicide.

The couple is also each charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct and felony possession of cocaine with intent to distribute after cops found drugs at the Third Street home.

  1. I wonder how many of these "accidents" are actually murder? The police to easily accept the "accident" story. Most of the time I would at least call them negligence.

    1. Anon,

Accidents are always negligence on the part of at least one person. The question is does it rise to the level of criminal negligence.

    2. Unfortunately these cases are called "accidents" and a criminal investigation never happens. Call it negligence and a criminal investigation is likely. Every case should be investigated for criminality, but that's not what's happening.

    3. That's right. Any and all misuse of a firearm should result in immediate suspension of the offender's right to own guns.

  2. It's perpetuating racism to include a photo of the black man unless it's an integral part of the written article. Just so you know.

    1. I don't often find myself defending Mikeb (this, in fact, may very well be a first), but please tell me you're kidding.

    2. Wow, a first. It's a damn shame too because now I can't accuse you of ALWAYS going against me.

Sandra, I suppose you were a drive by commenter, but in case you're still reading, do elaborate on your fascinating comment. The man pictured is the main protagonist of the story, did you realize that?

Why not? The fact that exceptions can be easily found has never stopped you in the past from making sweeping, "always" generalizations.

    4. Don't worry, Kurt. Give it a day or so, week tops, and he'll be back to saying that you always disagree with him as a reflex.

    5. I certainly won't be wagering against that prediction, Anon.
