Fatal Argument in Miami

The Miami Herald reports on a shooting which left one man dead.

A 43-year-old man was shot to death early Sunday on Okeechobee Road, authorities said.

The shooting followed an argument between two men about 7:30 a.m. at Okeechobee Road and Northwest 117th Avenue.

One pulled a gun, fatally wounding the other, said Detective Javier Baez, a Miami-Dade police spokesman. The victim's name was not released.

Police were looking for the gunman, who they said drove away in a white pickup truck.

Let's see, he was 43 years old so that means he was probably not a gang member. Plus Okeechobee Road is not in Liberty City. So, based on that, lets say this was just your everyday run-of-the-mill argument. In Miami though, just like in Houston and Newark, you take your life in your hands when you argue.

Two possible solutions I can see. One, don't argue with anyone. Even if it costs your self-respect and you feel like a punk, just don't argue with anyone. And two, carry a gun. This way you even up the odds, you don't have to back down from anybody and in a pinch, you can blow him away before he blows you away.

Which sounds best to you? Please leave a comment.

  1. How about both options? Don’t look for trouble, but be prepared.

  2. I don't understand why you limit yourself to "two possible solutions." I think this is like reading about a black bear attack in Colorado and saying there are only two solutions: Either stay out of the woods completely, or carry a rifle large enough to kill a bear.

Bear attacks in Colorado are very rare. I've had several bear encounters in Colorado, as Bears are everywhere in the mountains, and have yet to be mauled OR have to shoot one (which is good, as generally I've had no gun and when I did it was a pistol and NOT a bear gun).

Non-gang members shooting each other over an argument is rarer than a black bear attack. In the course of my life I've had a number of angry exchanges with people, once at a firing range with rifles nearby, and never has anyone gotten shot or has any violence taken place. Normal people can have arguments, even nasty ones, without resorting to violence. Duh.

The fact that there are people so nuts they'll resort to violence over a simple argument is why you need to carry a weapon, though. People this on edge carry weapons regardless of the law. So if it's legal to carry one and you don't, then you are obviously an irresponsible father/provider for your family.

Guns are good news for men, women, and anyone else who cares for their life or loves their children. ;-)

  3. "Let's see, he was 43 years old so that means he was probably not a gang member."

There is no age limit for being a gang member.

  4. Their Police Chief must not have had a press conference yet. You know, the one where he says the gunman used an AK-47. Every shooting in Miami is done with an AK-47 according to him.

"Let's see, he was 43 years old so that means he was probably not a gang member."

So gang members only target other gang members? Glad a gang member would never just shoot a 43 year old man.

I know nothing of Liberty City but that intersection is near a dead end in a swamp. I'm sure the two met there early in the morning to trade recipes and one got all pissy..

  5. Interesting. I looked at a Google map of that intersection. When I switched to satellite view and removed the labels, guess what is there. A white pickup truck. The image copyright is 2010. I wonder if Mr. White Truck parked there everyday and some deal went South.

  6. And two, carry a gun. This way you even up the odds, you don't have to back down from anybody and in a pinch, you can blow him away before he blows you away.

And this MikeB is why you're anti-gun. YOU can't be responsible, YOU can't handle non-violent conflict resolution. if YOU had a gun you'd be a violent hothead.

I've had someone get in my face while I was carrying. I let him. Why do I care if some asshole is going to get up in my face & bump chests to act all big & bad? I know I'm the better man, and the better man doesn't resort to violence unless he has to.

  7. Mike W. told me, "if YOU had a gun you'd be a violent hothead."

Wherever did you get that idea? Was it from my writing? Was it the lightning fast way I hit the delete button on half your comments? What was it.

I told you once before I had respect for you when you were going out for a few beers and decided not to carry. I also respect someone who can keep cool when someone gets in your face.

  8. FWM, Thanks for that link to the google maps. I think that white pickup has been appearing in a few stories lately.
