Home Invader Dead

WBALTV reports on a home invasion which ended with the intruder's death.

Baltimore County police are investigating a deadly shooting in Perry Hall.

Police responded at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday to a home in the 4200 block of Chapel Road.
Preliminary information from police is that a suspected burglar had somehow entered the home and was confronted by a resident.

Police said the suspect was armed with a gun. They also said the resident shot the suspect in the chest.

The suspect was taken to Franklin Square Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are questioning the resident, but they haven't released the name of the suspect nor the resident. Authorities were still at the scene Sunday night.

The resident is a tow-truck operator, 11 News' Kim Dacey reported Sunday night.

It's refreshing to see, what seems to be, another legitimate DGU in the news. I've been keeping an unofficial running total. This must bring the ratio down to about 1 legitimate DGU for every 110 wrongful shootings. Why do you think that is?

Because you're only counting DGUs where the aggressor is shot. If you include the ones where no shots were fired, The ratio would probably be a lot lower if not reversed.

AzRed omits something here. If we count those DGUs where a gun is brandished--ought we not acknowledge that many times a gun can be brandished not only to deter a criminal, but to harrass, intimidate, or threaten innocent parties as well?

Gunloons always like to pretend gun brandishments are for noble purposes.

  3. BTW, MikeB, wouldn't we be remiss in mentioning the NRA-inspired Hutaree today?

  4. Right on, JadeGold. I've made that point myself; I guess Aztec Red forgot.

  5. I don’t pretend this is some kind of race between DGUs and crimes. Criminals get to choose the time and place of their crimes and only then can a DGU reaction take place (if the victim happens to be prepared with a gun). With most crimes occurring outside the home, and only 2% of the population having a CCW (less than that actually practicing) we have a long way to go before the playing field is even. Regardless, I don’t think we should go by MikeB’s count of what makes a legitimate DGU.

Even if you were to include criminal brandishing, the ratio would still be closer to 1:2, not 1:110.

  7. Additionally I’ll contend that gun control only reduces the DGUs since we know it doesn’t stop the criminals. But let us say you are completely and utterly right on this one MikeB. The ratio is as you said 1/110 and then you get your wish of national repeal of all CCW laws, mandatory storage unloaded in bolted down safes, and repeal of all stand-your-ground/castle laws. This essentially eliminates legal self-defense with a gun. Your whole theory is based on trickled-down gun use. Take the guns away from the citizens so that less of them “flow” to the criminals. Now lets say for the first time in history, gun control actually works and you have less criminal use of guns (but even with this fantasy I am not going to go so far as to say all crime, not including guns, goes down). You’d have to admit that the numerator (the DGUs) would go down more than the denominator right? So what does your new ratio look like? 1/210? 1/1010? That is a call for even stronger gun control, right? What about all those potential DGU people who had to die for your cause? All worthy sacrifices in the name of a perceived social good?

Sorry, do you actually believe what you write? You're using reported media stories as the end-all of data on gun usage? Defensive gun usage doesn't make good news and isn't reported very often. Your statement really should be:

"This must bring the ratio down to about 1 media-reported DGU for every 110 media-reported wrongful shootings."

Pulling numbers out of your ass again eh MikeB?
