30-something. Still hangin' with preteens. |
I've noticed a good many gunloons are really, really into role-playing.

Role-playing is a good--and valuable--exercise when you're about 3-7 years old. But about the time concepts like Santa and the Easter Bunny go bye-bye--so , too, should role playing. Once role-playing goes beyond, say, the teen years--it's indicative of a problem.
Funny pics.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know what Laci thinks of your bashing on his hobbies.
ReplyDeleteWell first off, I try to be accurate in my reenacting, which takes me out of the Society for Creative Anachronism crowd.
ReplyDeleteI prefer for the medieval stuff to be realistic and called living history.
Secondly, the people I have problems with this type of activity are the ones pictured. They can't throw stones if they engage in similar activities.
That's hypocracy.
BTW, the picture that the gunloons found so funny was what I wear at Ommegang.
ReplyDeleteI have no problems with some of the SCA crowd or the other period historic groups; whether living history or historic re-enactment, I think there is some validity to trying out how people have lived in other eras as a means of learning, and appreciating history.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cousin is in the movie Dancing with Wolves as one of the extras, because they hired civil war historic re-enactors to bring their gear and be extras. I've done different periods, including teaching classes/demos on different skills, including natural dyes from plant material and minerals, book binding, any number of other skills. Lol, I can't sit through a movie or television program that is set in an historic period without being distracted by costume, set, or other inaccuracies, particularly armor and weapons.
Where do you guys think I learned the practical reason people used to beat dead horses - so long as they were quite recently dead (it marblizes in a very distinctive way the parchment subsequently made from the hides).
I agree with Laci though about the differences between schlocky efforts and those who do it meticulously well - count me on the side of the 'authenticity police' crowd.
Ommegang - fabulous pageant. MikeB, have you ever attended any of the Palios? That is something I would love to see some day.
I have yet to do the Palio di Siena, but I do have the flags of the Contrade. That took some effort to collect!
ReplyDeleteWow, the Contrade flags. That's cool.

ReplyDeleteThe only "Ommegang" that I'm familiar with is the brewery by that name in Milford, NY (everybody says they're in Cooperstown--that is incorrect). They make some great belgian style brews, Abbey Ale, Hennepin and 3 Philosphers among them.
Have you seen the History Channel documentary that compares Asian (specifically samurai and other japanese fighting techniques) with European styles of fighting in the middle ages and renaissance? I found it to be fascinating. They describes a lot of really foul tricks that left the foul trickster alive at the end of a battle while his more "chivalrous" (read idiotic traditionalist) lay dead or dying.
I will be sticking with the Ommegang I know and wish you well with yours!
I am familiar with Ommegang Brewery. The Brewery took the name from the event since they brew in the Belgian style. I believe they do their own version of the Brussels Ommegang, but it lacks quite a bit without the architecture of the Grand Place.
ReplyDeleteI missed the History channel programme and couldn't find any info on the net.

ReplyDelete"Reclaiming The Blade" (2008). I saw it on NetFlix and while it's not long enough to really get into a lot of detail, it's a well done video.
