What Every Gun Rights Activist Fears

  1. And, like much of the gunzloonz' rhetoric, this is based on incontroverible factifabricationess bullshitus.

A very elaborate gunsafe and no alarm system on the house, yeah, that makes sense.

  2. This is one of the most stupid, paranoiac appealing nonsense I have ever seen.

The homeowner/ tenant should have called the police immediately - and didn't.

If the residents had a dog, the dog would most probably have alerted by barking as soon as the intruder came near the house, not to mention if it were an outside dog, going for him when he came over the fence and was vulnerable, or an inside dog going for him in the dark as he came through the window.

Overwhelmingly, dogs are a deterrent to someone entering the home as burglars/ home intruders.

Lastly - 'hide under the bed'? seriously? The bedroom has windows; how about LEAVE? Or how about move something in front of the door to block it opening, for starters?

There are so damn many effective things that are alternatives to the false notion the only thing you can do is grab your gun and start shooting.

This unintentionally defines the essence of what is wrong with the pro-gun pro-castle defense crowd.

This is a fabulous example of why some of these people are too stupid to be allowed to own guns; they shoot instead of think, they opt for deadly force instead of common sense.

  3. I disagree.

Gunloons fear things like facts, truth and people pointing at their crotches and snickering.

Home invasion is way, way down on their list of worries.

  4. Apparently the - again, pardon the pun - target audience for this video are people who are unsophisticated and not very cerebral.

Otherwise they would be picking up on not only the logical failures of this video, but on the blatant methods of manipulation.

The video not only plays to something they wish to use as a justification for their fear, it works by pairing that with a common dislike of bureaucratic delay, inefficiency, and a perceived balking of their desires.

That emotional appeal is calculated to interfere, to block, critical thinking taking over and interfering with the success of the message being internalized.

Pretty basic psychology of persuasion, using emotion to bypass reason response.

  5. Persuasion nothing--appealing to the emotion is a classic propaganda technique. Propaganda plays on emotions. It defies reason and facts in order to reach into the psyche of the audience. Propaganda is a mind game: the skillful propagandist plays with your deepest emotions, exploiting your greatest fears and prejudices.

Propaganda researchers Anthony Pratkanis and Elliot Aronson define modern propaganda as "mass 'suggestion' or 'influence' through the manipulation of symbols and the psychology of the individual. Propaganda involves the dexterous use of images, slogans and symbols that play on our prejudices and emotions; it is the communication of a point of view with the ultimate goal of having the recipient of the appeal come to 'voluntarily' accept this position as if it were his or her own."

Fear is the best weapon of the propagandist. And this piece hits all those scary hot buttons.

So much for the armed intelligentsia being able to spot they are being played for fools.

  6. Wow. Now THAT is some A+ acting and plot. Shame it's science fiction. Can we please switch back to the Real World?

  7. ROFL - good point Baldr.

I never thought I'd watch something and prefer so-called reality tv programming.

We can only hope these are PAID actors, and that even if it was for a one-off, that at least it created a job while it was laying an enormous egg.

  8. Fringed made a comment, part of which I will post here.

The remainder used language that I found unacceptable; for that reason I deleted it.

    The post part is:
Shall not be infringed has left a new comment on your post "What Every Gun Rights Activist Fears":

Lastly - 'hide under the bed'? seriously? The bedroom has windows; how about LEAVE? Or how about move something in front of the door to block it opening, for starters?

Amen to that I am not for coming out shooting, no point in that....

Fringed took exception to my suggestion that leaving was a superior solution to either being shot or to hiding under the bed.

I think the better suggestions I offered were to blockade the door and to phone the police. If one knew the police were close, or as an alternative suggestion to someone unarmed, leavingis superior to confronting the intruder.

My point, which Fringed missed is that there are alternatives which do not require a firearm that work equally well to confrontation with a weapon.

Fringe, if you care to make a comment that does not rely on foul language, I will consider it for posting.

In the mean time, my position that a firearm is not necessary to deal successfully with this scenario stands.

Fringed also wrote: So, how about I shout out thru the closed door, "I have called the police, I have a gun, and I will shoot you if you enter this room!"

Also a good suggestion; I'm sure wecould come up with additional possibilities with relatively litle effort.

  9. The funniest part is the unspoken understanding that many gun-rights folks believe this would happen if not for their diligence and drawing the line in the sand.
