Michigan May Move the Wrong Way on the Gun Show Loophole

Michigan Live reports
Hoping to stop potential votes by a lame-duck Legislature, Michigan mayors and police officers on Monday said no longer requiring handgun owners to have a license would allow 50,000 sales each year in the state without criminal background checks.

Federally licensed firearm dealers are required to conduct background checks so felons, drug dealers and others cannot buy a gun - and that will stay the same no matter what.

But legislation that quietly cleared the Republican-controlled House in June - and is pending in the GOP-led Senate - would eliminate background checks for person-to-person sales at gun shows, on the Internet or elsewhere.
Interesting that the police are in favor of maintaining this important gun control restriction. The gun-rights folks never tire of repeating the lie that the cops are on their side.

The tragedy of this is it would move Michigan in the wrong direction.  How anyone could think that's a good thing is beyond me.

What do you think?  Please leave a comment-

  1. It's a wonder that they have a time to pass such a law, having spent the last few days gutting the union movement in MI with a right-to-work* law.

    * Known to people who can actually read and remember their history as corpokleptocratic theft--more welfare for the wealthy.

  2. Mikeb, you mean that political appointees in the police departments are against this. But how long will it take you to recognize a trend? The country is moving farther and farther our direction.

    2. The way articles call magazines clips and semiautomatic rifles assault rifles?

Many rank-and-file police are on the side of armed citizens. It is the politically elected/appointed leadership that opposes the rights of citizens to carry around the objects of their choosing -- including firearms.

Numerous active duty and retired law enforcement officers -- and even some Sheriffs -- refuse to enforce laws that outright prohibit the right of citizens to carry firearms for personal protection. Heck just look at the two or three counties in Illinois where the prosecutors have gone on record saying they will not prosecute citizens arrested only for carrying a concealed firearm when there was no intent to commit a crime.

And you have a list of their names? Or are you just talking out your ass, as usual?

    1. How about this:

But I won't expect you to comment. You don't seem to read replies that disprove your bull.

    2. First of all, your superfluous nastiness was wrong. I usually read and reply to everything.

Secondly, the survey proves your side wrong. You always say the police chiefs are all too political to take such a view.

Thirdly, it's five years old. Is that the best you could do?

Fourthly, it was a loaded question. Anytime it starts out with "Do you agree," you get a slanted response.

    3. Mike,

This was a reply to democommie (that is why it is indented under his comment). He is the one I was describing when I said "You don't seem to read replies that disprove your bull."

And not all police chiefs are political - usually just those in big cities where the political infection runs rampant.

    4. Mikeb, you add a "Do you agree" line to many articles you post.

Which means that they are derelict in their sworn duty to uphold the law. Of course a lot of those same people prolly hate them pesky civil rights, separation of church and state and domestic abuse laws.
