Philadelphia Murders Up in 2012

philly.com reports
The five homicides this weekend bring the city's murder tally to 305 this year, up from 303 at the same time last year, according to the latest statistics available from the police department.
Four of those were by gunfire. Philadelphia now joins Baltimore and Oakland as another city that hasn't seen the benefits of the declining crime rate we keep hearing about. The reason: increased gun availability.

  1. Mike, you do realize that several cities can have increased murder rates while the country as a whole is decreasing? It is called an average, and I would certainly expect you to find a lot more than three that don’t fall in line with the national average- hundreds even. Heck, it is mathematically possible for every city in the nation to be increasing while the country average continues to decrease because a lot of people don’t live in a city. Math- it’s kindof funny that way.

By the way, Philadelphia’s increase is 0.6% over last year. And you’re using that as a “gottcha”?

Also, you never showed us how gun ownership- or better yet CCW (that will be a hoot for you to claim) is up in Baltimore and Oakland.

    1. Even one percent would be only a fluctuation, not a trend. Watching you try to analyze data is painful.

    3. And what is it exactly that MikeB is doing Tom? Creating a blog and pontificating on gun control is not the same as action. You can't point to one life directly or indirectly that Mike has saved.

    5. Yeah, it isn't over, but that also means it could end up less. Unlike Baltimore and Oakland, this stat says "at the same time last year".

    1. To my knowledge it is still possible for a common person to buy a gun in Philadelphia.

    2. I stand corrected. I was referring to Philadelphia's attempts to severely limit the areas in which someone with a licence can legally carry. This was an issue some years ago - but it looks like it has been resolved and is no longer an issue.

      My apologies.

    3. Philadelphia is itching to pass restrictions, but the state preempts local gun laws. Thank goodness Harrisburg is looking out for the rights of all citizens in that state.

    4. Yeah, those Harrisburg policies are doing wonders for Philly, not to mentions its sister-cesspool across the river.

    5. New Jersey has stupid gun laws, but those are the state's own fault.
