Utah Man Shot by Girlfriend - It Was Just an Accident - No Charges

A man was hospitalized Wednesday after his girlfriend accidentally shot him in the knee.
The couple had just finished hunting Wednesday morning and the woman was unloading her Remington Bolt Action Rifle when it accidentally fired into her boyfriend's knee, said Summit County Sheriff's Capt. Justin Martinez.
"There does not appear to be anything suspicious about this, that we had a domestic, that this was intentional. At this time the investigation is showing that it appears to be completely accidental," Martinez said.
Do you see the problem?
As long as we consider accidents perfectly acceptable we cannot expect to cut their numbers.

  1. Except that the number of accidents is at a low for several decades--don't you recall us showing you that?

    1. So just accept the current death rate?

    2. Greg, 90% of the accidents are not reported. Let's use the same round number you use for estimating the number of DGUs, shall we?

That means the number of "accidents" is in the millions.

Don't tell me you only want to count the ones when send people to the hospital while you count every possible DGU, brandishings, snake scarings, everything.

    3. Ninety percent are unreported? It must be fun to live in a fantasy world where you can make up statistics to suit every need.

    4. It must be interesting to live in a world where you accept needless death. Shows an interesting character also.

    5. I don't "accept needless death." I recognize that nothing Mikeb offers will do any good.

    6. Greg, I was just using the same standard used in DGU estimates. Consistency demands it.

    7. No, you're using your own method of calculation--namely, throw together a lot of guesses with no evidence.

    8. 90% of gun accidents go unreported? What are we talking about by "accident"? Pinching your thumb under the hammer? Yeah, that smarts alright.

    9. Accidents would include any and all unintentional misuses of the gun. Human nature dictates that any time there are no witnesses, the fuck-up would go unreported. Can we agree on that? Plus, many cases in which there are witnesses, especially if no one is injured, also go unreported. You guys loved the 90% estimation Kleck came up with for DGUs. Why would this be any different?

    10. Why am I not surprised that Mikeb goes for Zen koans? If a gun falls in a forest and no one is hurt, will gun control freaks go after gun owners who weren't there?

    11. If it requires a hospital trip- it gets reported to the police.

    12. And if it doesn't require a hospital visit, we forget about it - it doesn't exist.
