A 14-year-old Colorado girl was shot and killed by her stepfather early Monday morning after he mistook her for a burglar entering their house.
She later died at a local hospital.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that the shooting took place around 6 a.m. Monday. Police were initially called to the house to respond to a burglary attempt.
The Associated Press reported that authorities are determining whether the stepfather acted recklessly. The state’s “make my day” law allows homeowners the right to shoot and kill an intruder in self-defense inside their homes if they feel the other person is there to commit a crime and use physical force against them.
Originally known as the Homeowner Protection Act, the law’s nicknames is a reference to Clint Eastwood’s oft-quoted line, “Go ahead, make my day,” from the film Sudden Impact.
No arrests were made at the time of the incident, and the names of the victim and her stepfather were not released, while police and prosecutors continue their respective investigations.
Doubtful. He meant to shoot her. The act of owning a gun turns automatically makes the gun owner "responsible".
ReplyDeleteFor a man obsessed with his hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
DeleteThe price to protect his house and to exercise his possible right to kill at will.
ReplyDeleteIdentify your target before you shoot.
ReplyDeleteGreg, I'm surprised you're not defending him for perhaps having been afraid for his life.
DeleteOf course you're surprised. You refuse to meet me, having a preference for a strawman.
DeleteC'mon Greg, how many times have you defended guys just like this one. You normally use any excuse to do so, the investigation is not over yet or maybe he really did fear for his life. Remember the Alzheimer's guy? You defended that shooter to the point of absurdity. Now, what, you're suddenly reasonable and I'm wrong for calling you on it?
DeleteDifferent circumstances--the Alzheimer's guy, as you put it, may have been acting in a dangerous manner. The sheriff there saw no reason for charges, and despite your claims, law enforcement isn't friendly toward citizens who shoot people.
DeleteThe man in this story shot someone without identifying who the target was. He did so, knowing that he had family that may be moving about the house. I don't defend everyone who shoots someone. I look at each case individually. You, by contrast, rush to judgement against the shooter in most cases.
I've never heard of Alzheimer patients being described as violent, as part of that condition.
DeleteIf he "may" have been acting...., then you don't know, but you defended him anyways?
That's my point, Greg. You look at each case but your conclusions are as capricious as can be, naturally leaning towards supporting the shooter, but not always.
DeleteI said in that article that some Alzheimer's patients become violent. Not all, some. And given the fact that the local sheriff concluded that the shooting was not a crime, what other conclusion seems likely? Law enforcement isn't noted for being sympathetic to people who shoot someone--intentionally, at the very least.
DeleteBullshit. Police are sympathetic to shooters. They constantly (like you) call negligence, accidents.
DeleteThe obvious conclusion in the Alzheimer's case is that the sheriff is a gun nut like you who supports other gun nuts even when they're in the wrong.
DeleteAnonymous, the police have to follow the law. They aren't supposed to make things up just to suit you.
DeleteMikeb, please do keep believing that. The more absurd you are, the easier our victories become.
"Anonymous, the police have to follow the law. They aren't supposed to make things up just to suit you."
DeleteBut they do.
Shoot first, ask questions later.
ReplyDeleteThe gun loon motto.
How goddamn stupid are some people? "Identify your target"! He did just that and hit it real good.
ReplyDeleteNo, he didn't, unless this was intentional murder. Identify your target--to intelligent people--means know what you're considering shooting before you shoot. People like you who think it means line up the sights aren't bright enough to maneuver through life unsupervised.
DeleteYou're so mind screwed you couldn't recognize your flawed logic even if you wanted to.
DeletePeople "like me" huh? You are just that "goddamn stupid"!
If you have logical points to make, then make them. I doubt you're able.
DeleteWell we know you cannot make a logical point, but then criminals usually cannot.
Delete"The state’s “make my day” law allows homeowners the right to shoot and kill an intruder in self-defense inside their homes if they feel the other person is there to commit a crime and use physical force against them."
ReplyDeleteHow would he know any of that when he did not have a clue who he was shooting at? Self defense? Did the 14 year old attack him? Did he see her stealing his property? Did she have a weapon of any kind? He shot before he knew anything. What do they call it, negligent homicide?
You're right, Jim, but "no arrests were made." Unbelievable.
DeleteAnother NRA clown shoots and kills his kid. Every single NRA clown is one moment of stupidity away from this situation. Remember, you are between 2x-45x more likely to be killed in a house with a gun by the person you share the house with. Very few people are killed in their home by strangers. It's almost always the person you share the bed with. Gunsucks are pathetic losers.
ReplyDeletePoe's law.
