The NRA WANTS guns in the hands of the Dangerously Mentally Ill

From the Washington Times:
House approves $20 million more for gun background checks

The U.S. House on Thursday passed legislation to provide an additional $20 million to incentivize states to submit more records into the federal instant background-check system, handing gun-control advocates a modest win on the issue after a series of high-profile defeats at the federal level. The amendment to a broader spending bill would bring National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) grant funding to about $78 million. The 2014 level is $59 million, up from $18 million in fiscal 2013. It passed by a vote of 260-145, with one member voting “present.”
Our national criminal background-check system is only as good as the data you put in it, and right now all the information isn’t getting into the system,” the six representatives said in a joint statement after the vote. “When this happens, we can’t enforce the law, and criminals, domestic abusers, or dangerously mentally ill individuals who otherwise wouldn’t pass a background check can slip through the cracks and buy guns.”

Let's be honest shall we?

The ONLY reason we have a problem with the states not supplying the data on felons and the dangerously ill is that the NRA pushed, hard, to make compliance with the NICS data base voluntary --- and then worked just as hard, if not harder, at the state legislature level to keep compliance from being funded.

While the FBI is the keeper of the various state data bases that comprise the NICS data base, the actual individual data bases belong to the states.

Incentivizing the states is a great start, and helping them to comply is a good idea (some states are badly strapped for funds) but it should be done in conjunction with making compliance compulsory.

We need to make it harder for the dangerously mentally ill to get guns by any means - FFL dealers, but also those who are selling guns at gun shows and private sales.

It is in the interest of gun manufacturers to keep gun sales easy and without restriction even for the most dangerous people -- the drug users, the dangerously mentally ill, and the violent felons. They sell guns to the prohibited people, and then they sell guns to the gun fetishists for self-defense against the people who should not have guns.

After making it EASIER for the dangerously mentally ill to get guns in the first place, they then try to blame mental health issues for the problem, when too easy gun access is clearly the problem.

And if anyone is terrorized, intimidated, injured or killed, hey, what's a little blood, so long as the balance sheet for the gun manufacturers continues to be black, and the radical right thinks they have a wedge issue?

DG, there is only one point in time where gun manufacturers make their money. That is at the initial sale, which just happens to be the sale guaranteed to be done at an FFL and where everyone goes through an NICS background check.
Guess how much profit gun manufacturers make from all sales after that? Zero, Zip, Nada. In fact, if it were all just a money thing, you should be getting FFLs to be pushing for universal background checks because the result would be extra profit with little expense. After all, they've already paid for access to NICS.

    1. ss, you're being purposely naive to suggest that the gun manufacturers don't plan on the fact that a huge percentage of their product ends up in the criminal world. In fact they lobby for the same loose gun laws that make this gun flow possible.

    2. What? Gun manufactures make no money?

      Not after the initial sale.

    4. "Not after the initial sale" doesn't mean shit. The manufacturers and make and sell hundreds of thousands of guns each year MORE than can be absorbed by the lawful gun owning community. They count on the continual gun flow into the criminal world.

    5. As with any other business, after the initial sale comes service, repeat sales and add on products. Any gun maker knows that "word of mouth" is the most effective advertising. I think that the number of "law abiding" gun owners far out number criminals that may use a gun. Based on NYC press release, the average time that a gun is recovered at a crime is 11 years after it was first sold. So, criminals are not buying their guns new from dealers. Criminals most get their guns by thief.

Gun manufacturers, like any other business don't make money if their product doesn't sell. And if they make more than the market will bear, they sit on the shelf and they make no money. And every initial sale goes through an FFL. Every. Single. One.

    7. Then why is the gun industry one of the few (if not only) who refuse to record for future use (promotion, solicitation, etc) the information of its buyers?
As usual SS's "after the initial sale" comment was meant to convey a false meaning. As Mike said, that's bull shit.
The fact that criminals get most of their guns from thievery only shows we need better tracking on all guns.
The billions spent on sales and marketing of any/all products proves that "word of mouth" is not the best advertising to increase sales. Since a gun is made to kill, fear does make sales go up and the promotion of fear is the NRA's forte.

    8. It doesn't matter how they get them or how long it takes. The bottom line is there's a continual flow of guns from law abiding owners to criminals. The gun makers know this and build it into their sales projections. In fact, they lobby for laws that make this gun flow possible. It's all about the bottom line.

Actually they do Anon. Manufacturers aren't allowed to sell to individuals, they are only allowed to sell to FFLs. So the manufacturers keep records of which FFL receives each serial numbered firearm. And each FFL records in turn, as required by law record who they sell to.

    10. Why don't gun store owners keep and use buyer information to solicit and promote to previous gun buyers as every other business does?

Well, release of the data on the form by the government is prohibited under the Privacy Act of 1974. Perhaps they don't need to since when someone wants to buy, they know where to go.

  2. Great post. Of course, the gun lobby wants guns for anyone who wants them so they can scare everyone about all of those guns in the hands of those who shouldn't have them. And then those "anyones" shoot other people and the corporate gun lobby is in denial about where the guns come from or that we could stop some people from getting them. Circular and flawed and dangerous reasoning.

    1. Actually, you are wrong. The gun lobby would be very happy to just sell guns with being attacked every day by well funded hate groups like the MDA. The number of guns that are purchased by criminals (including crazies) is very small compared to their back log of guns waiting to be built for purchasers that have already placed money for them.

      Delete
    2. What very small. There are half-a-million guns stolen each year. Add that to those that are straw purchased and you've got lots of guns each year, year after year that need to be replaced.

    2. And what office is Mr Martinez going to run for on the blood of his dead son? How many millions will he put is his pocket as a result?
Sorry, but Mr Martinez has long passed any allowance for his loss and is not just one more political hack attempting to profit from the blood of others.

    3. Policemen are 3X more likely to commit a crime than citizens who have a concealed carry permit.

Regular US citizen are 9X more likely to commit a crime than citizens who have a CC permit.

Oh don't you hate those pesky facts?

      The panties twist tighter.

    5. How may mass shooting are stopped before they happen because of a trained and armed citizen? Lots and lots.
If the CA killer would have been confronted by an armed citizen sooner the kill count would have been smaller. Of course, the gun control groups never mention that CA laws have discouraged the honest armed citizen in every possible way. They at the same time seem to support Yee has his gun running.

    6. If, if, if a good guy with a gun stopped these bad guns with guns. But they don't, and that's why we lead the world (by far) in gun shot deaths. Like any crime statistic, it reflects a tiny minority of the general populace of law abiding citizens, which is why more laws and regulations do work. Once we got seat belt compliance up, deaths went down. Many gun shot deaths are caused by negligent handling, stupidity, and guns not being stored away properly, as Mike's posts prove everyday.

    7. Allan, no one's limiting this discussion to permit holders.

Anonymous, your statistics are bullshit. They're based on faulty data and complied by gun-rights fanatics.

Texas, Not many mass shootings have been stopped before they happen. The Loughner case is a typical one. In the crowd there were several permit holders, yet not a one of them could intervene in time.

Yeah I'm guessing you think they are "faulty" because it doesn't line up to the lies of the Left. Well imagine that.

Any problems with that introductory stat from me about the number of CC states?

I'm happy to move along knowing that we're winning more every day.

You're ignoring some important facts here. First, the dangerously ill are protected by HIPA law. Don't you think that law should be modified to allow the states to report such things? Second, you blame the NRA rather than the states themselves, the same way people like you blame the gun rather than the criminal scum bag wielding it.

  8. Blah, Blah, more gun control. It is an individual right as defined by SCOTUS. Once the bloomberg money dries up bloggers will quit writing about it. The bottom line is gun control is another failed liberal policy. It has and will never work because you can't legislate crazy. A good start would be better background checks on liberal democrats. Those guys are doing all the murdering.
