John McCain on Torture

24 comments:

  1. Human Rights Sen. McCain?
To enrich your State you are taking land away from Native Americans and giving it to a non American corporation so they can mine copper. No compensation for the Native Americans, just an outright land theft. Given our negative history with Native Americans, which I would compare to the treatment Hitler gave the Jews, you certainly are an ugly American.

    1. Then you should have no trouble coming up with some evidence? If only a single iota of it?

Deafening silence. Telling, but not in the least surprising. You seem to have misidentified the "liar," Mikeb. Let me help you out. Got a mirror handy?

      Don't thank me--happy to help.

  2. Ahem:

I don't count myself among the liberal voices who denounce all this torture business accross the board. I've watched Jack Bauer use torture for the greater good. I admit, although his is a fictional character, there may be cases in which it is necessary. I don't fancy myself in a position to judge such things.

    1. Here's the follow up comment which you left out (by the way, taking things out of context in order to mislead is a form of dishonesty):

"All right, all right, I'm against torture too. I don't know what got into me when I wrote that post. I just wanted to make that silly reference to Jack Bauer, I guess.

So, now that we're all on the same page, what say we rejuvenate that old arrest-Bush-and-Cheney deal and try them for condoning torture?"

    2. Yes, you eventually allowed yourself to be shamed into claiming (credibly or not) a 180-degree reversal of your original position, to the point of calling for the arrest and trial of the old regime's leaders, for doing what you'd previously said you "didn't fancy [your]self in a position to judge [and remember that you fancy yourself qualified to judge people for nearly everything]." I never said your pro-torture stance was permanent.

    3. What the hell is up with the stupid, irrelevant, (presumably) automatically-generated hyperlinks in the comments?

    4. Oops--the hyperlinks thing is apparently on my end--something weird my browser is doing. Sorry about that.

    5. Kurt, I wasn't shamed into admitting anything. I made a stupid joke about Jack Bauer and admitted it - something you yourself have been known to do.

But, what you did was deceitful. Quoting the one line without the other in order to personally attack me.

    6. I made a stupid joke about Jack Bauer . . .

Oh? I thought you "[did]n't know what got into [you]." Now it was a "stupid joke" all along? Hmm . . .

Oh, and "deceitful"? I linked to the post, where the comments could all be seen--hardly the behavior of someone trying to pull a fast one.

    7. What you did was pick out only the one quote and put it in italics. Hardly the behavior of an honest person.

I directly quoted what you said--the entire paragraph, without editing.

Granted, I did not bother to quote your fallback position, posted 28 hours and 10 minutes later, when in a panic of humiliation you retracted your previous statement.

Documenting your bumbling attempts to clean up your messes ain't my job, and clearly you don't need me to volunteer to do it, since you pointed out the sudden (if quite belated) reversal of your position without my help.

    9. You're a proven liar, Kurt, your persistent protestation notwithstanding.

Hmm . . . "proven," is it? Then you should have no trouble coming up with some evidence? If only a single iota of it?

'Cause so far, I haven't seen you manage that, much less any "proof."

    11. YES! Proven liar, Kurt.

  3. Obama's legacy will feature prominently ending the reign of terror perpetrated by the Bush/Cheney administration. Simply at his word, the barbaric practice came mostly to an end. Stain is right, John. To his credit, McCain never gave an inch to the torturers. My wife still has a letter from famed Viet Nam flying ace, Duke Cunningham, stating his unequivocal opposition to torture.

Why in the name of all that is holy are the extreme war pigs like Cheney circling the wagons and defending this disgusting travesty posthumously? What is their demonic purpose? Vanity! And nothing else. Vile men that once were at the centers of power of the greatest nation on earth. The senate report needed to come out so that the sins of the sadistic Bush presidency were laid out across the rocks and deserts of the world like so many dead bodies in the harsh glare of the sun. Cheney wants his sins to be covered. Does not wish to live in infamy and hatred for the rest of history.

    1. I think Cheney is trying to ward off any attempt to prosecute him. He's meeting the threat with aggression. It's his personality.

  4. It is illegal under the Constitution and by international treaty. We know the guilty parties and where they live. Why does Obama's Justice Dept. not prosecute these bastards? It'ss not like Bush or Cheney are gonna skip the country - then they'd be arrested. Tell Obama to do his damn job.

    1. Then it follows that Obama should be tried for the assassination of American citizens without due process of law. Let's try to be consistent here Mikeb.

    2. It was Obama who refused to investigate Bush and his administration for criminal behavior. Obama probably can't be charged for that, but he should be.

    3. Orlin, if there was anything at all to what you keep repeating, the Fox News Obama haters would be on it. They're not.

    4. So you think Fox News would not protect or stifle anything anti-Bush?
Besides, Obama is simply carrying out illegal Bush policies.

    5. Not all of them. Obama's first action in office was the clarify that we do not condone torture.
