When I first started blogging you gun nuts (not YOU gun nuts, but your predecessors) told me no crimes were ever committed with assault rifles. Some time later, it changed and the gun nuts started talking about how tiny the precentage is, less than "one tenth of one percent" is what they used to say. After that, Obama became the best assault rifle salesmen the world had ever known, with a little help from WayNe La Pierre, and we stopped hearing about it at all.
But Mike, there was a federal assault weapon ban in effect and even after ten years, they couldn't provide any data to show that it had had much if any affect on gun violence. Part of that was likely due to long arms being used pretty rarely in crime.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, they couldn't even get a bill for a ten year extension on the sunset date out of committee. So if a ban isn't having any effect on crime, that would suggest that a ban isn't the solution.

ReplyDeleteSomeone claimed that "no crimes were ever committed with 'assault rifles'"? If you say so, but that was never said by anyone I would ever take seriously. The "less than 'one tenth of one percent'" is, on the other hand, eminently plausible.
. . . . and we stopped hearing about it at all.
Hearing about what at at all, the vanishingly small percentage of so-called "assault weapons" used in violent crime? If so, you've not been listening.
