Woman Kills Man with .22 Rifle

The Des Moines Register reports on the fairly rare occurrence of a female shooter and a male victim.

Rock Rapids, Ia. — A man who was shot in the head at his home in Rock Rapids has died, authorities said Wednesday.

Levi Hofer died Tuesday at a hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Hofer was shot with a .22-caliber rifle on Sunday, Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendall said. His girlfriend, Laura Lowe, was charged Monday with attempted murder.

Hofer and Lowe had been drinking, and started fighting, Bloemendall said.

What kind of drinking and fighting would it have to be to end like this? These people must have qualified for the 10% theory under several categories. What do you think?

Doesn't it seem like the proportion of female criminal shooters is far less than the proportion of female gun owners? Why is that?

Is a .22 to the head usually lethal? Does it depend on how it enters? Does it differ from a pistol to a rifle?

What's your opinion? Please leave a comment.

I decided to respond after I stopped laughing.

A .22 has the power to penetrate one of those skull thingies, yes.

Brains don't take to well to penetrating objects.

In general, brains don't much care which direction they're scrambled.

In general, rifles will propel a projectile at a higher velocity than the same round out of a pistol.

The fact that you are asking these questions is priceless.

  2. The only reason why women aren't criminal shooters at the same rate as men is because women have a lower rate of participation in criminal activity in general. Crime is primarily a young (16-25 year old) male activity.

The human head is a funny thing. Very hard in some places and ridiculously vulnerable in others. That's why being shot in the head can sometimes mean being shot dead or simply knocked silly. It all depends on the round, what part of the head that is hit, and the angle of impact. Under the right conditions, a .22 would be lethal.
