Guns in America

The Huffington Post has a slide show which is funny and sick and worrying all at the same time.

Here's my favorite. I've named it like this: "Young Timothy McVeigh wannabe teaches granny proper gun etiquette."

I know the camera is on a tripod, right? And besides she's aiming above it, right? And maybe her finger isn't really on the trigger.

Some of the other pics on HuffPo are even worse.

  1. You know what's funny?

That these aren't even the funniest pictures of gunloons. What's hilarious are the pics the gunloons post themselves that they think are cool.

Examples include the famous wedding photos of the Hutaree gunloons. Or the "people of the gun" website. You look at such photos and think 'what on earth were they thinking?'

But then it dawns on you: gunloons.

  2. For me the funniest thing is how the commenters around here try to disassociate themselves from the idiots who pose for pictures like these. Maybe it's true, maybe the ones who pose with their fingers on the trigger or do the old muzzle sweep mambo, don't write pro gun blogs. But these photos go a long way towards lending credibility to my 10% theory.

  3. Roger that, Mike B.

I remember one gunloon that happily posted a newspaper photo--all over--of himself holding a shotgun while a Glock dangled from the front pocket of his jeans.

When I responded saying that it was an unsafe practice to jam a handgun down in a pants pocket or a waistband, he, of course, launched into a hissy fit majeure. He swore up and down that it was ok because he *knew* the weapon was unloaded. When I replied about gun safety 101's treat every firearm as if it is loaded--he got all Sassi.

  4. I think Robert Farago sums up my thoughts in his TTAG post when he says:

The HuffPo’s pictorial polemic is the worst kind of Bill O’Reilly / Rachel Maddow-style commentary: nasty, close-minded, low-quality, anti-intellectual tripe that invites its consumers to bask in their righteousness by pissing on their opponents.

I have to agree. Posts like this come across as rather petty and certainly don't add to the discussion on how to reduce gun violence.

  5. Yeah, there are some irresponsible, idiotic people who have guns, and some of them will shoot themselves or others unintentionally (and tragically). It sucks, but what does it have to do with me?

There are also idiots like this driver, and they'll cause tragic deaths and injuries. Does that mean we need more laws restricting who can get phones and/or cars? They'll need to be federal laws, of course, so that people can't be buying phones/cars in states with "lax phone/car laws," thus causing "phone/car flow" from the lax states to the states with "reasonable phone/car laws."

I'm not sure how they come across on the Huffington Post or what their intentions are, but when I post something like this it's simply to support my very popular 10% theory.
I certainly don't intend that all or even most gun owners are like these guys, and I doubt if the HuffPo folks do either.

Furthermore, posts like this have little to do with "how to reduce gun violence," as Ruff said, they have to do with the need to do so.

  7. Well, considering that the pipsqueak in the picture thinks that his physique is so "buff" that he should pose, shirtless, for that photo says a bit more about him than I really need to know.

  8. Democommie's comment is a perfect example of the petulant type of posts observed at the Huffington post.

Furthermore, posts like this have little to do with "how to reduce gun violence," as Ruff said, they have to do with the need to do so.

Eh? Because bad pictures lead to gun violence?

Live and let live man. If people want to take stupid pictures with their guns let them. At the end of the day it has absolutely zero effect on your life.

Well, that is the point and I certainly hope it works out like that.
