Tennessee Common Sense

a gunowner and gun-rights supporter lays out a simple plan.

Here’s how it would work: The state legislature should require all gun sales be run through a TBI records check to make sure the purchaser is not a convicted felon, illegal immigrant, underage or mentally ill. TBI also should check to make sure the gun being sold is not listed as stolen property. This same check is conducted in every gun shop and pawnshop in Tennessee today.

If the legislature passes this law, I suggest TBI have a booth at every gun show in the state, and for a $10 fee the record check would be performed on all individual sales. TBI also should have a state 800 number for all individual gun sales, and to pay the $10 fee, TBI should accept all credit cards. The fee could be waived for valid handgun-permit holders.

  1. So again, we have a gun control proposal with nothing offered in return. Will Tennessee offer concealed carry on college campuses? Will carry license holders be exempted from the background check (not just the fee)? Why should we give up something for nothing?
