on a young man who came into the police station with a gun to try and break his girlfriend out. She'd been arrested earlier in the evening for drunk and disorderly.
Stewart was asked to leave and did so, but returned seconds later and fought with two officers as they tried to take him in custody, police said. During the struggle, Stewart pulled a fully-loaded gun out and although officers were able to wrestle it away from him before any shots were fired, a bullet was ejected from the gun somehow during the struggle.
One of the big false arguments of the gun fanatics is that gun free zones attract miscreants because they know there'll be no resistance. Well, it just so happens that the Upper Darby Police Station has more incidents than your average gun-free college campus.
This is not the first time the Upper Darby police station has been a "battleground," according to Chitwood. In August 2004, there was a man who was shot and killed in the lobby by police and one of the officers involved was himself injured by friendly fire during the incident.
What's your opinion? Don't you think there are enough incidents like this one in which the crazy shooter actually engages the police to debunk that claim of gun-free zones attracting problems?

ReplyDeleteThe majority of mass shootings occur in gun free zones. Here's a small list for your reading pleasure.
October 1991 - Killeen, Texas. Luby's. 22 killed 20 wounded.
March 1998 - Jonesboro, Arkansas. 5 killed, 10 wounded at Westside middle school.
April 1999 - Columbine. 12 killed
October 2002 - Washington, DC 10 killed by "DC Sniper"
August 2003 - Chicago a laid-off worker shot and killed 6 of his former workmates.
March 2005 - Brookfield, Wisconsin. A man opened fire at a church service, killing 7.
March 2005 - Red Lake, Minnesota. Red Lake High School.7 killed 7 wounded.
October 2006 - Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. a truck driver killed five schoolgirls and seriously wounded six others.
April 2007 - Virginia Tech. 32 killed, 15 wounded
February 2008 - Chicago, Ill. six women tied up and shot at a clothing store.
February 2008 - DeKalb, Illinois. Northern Illinois University. five students killed and 16 wounded

Yeah, I'd say there's more University shootings than police station shootings.

ReplyDeleteBut the police station in question is a gun free zone.
The person who wishes to commit multiple murder is a different sort of criminal from this one. The man in this story had a specific and narrow motivation. It was also stupid, but there it is. A mass shooter wants to pick an easy environment with lots of unarmed people to attack.
ReplyDeleteI kind of agree with Mike. A better way to phrase it is that mass shooters are more successful in gun free zones. Trying to make sense of the decisions of a madman is not the best idea.
ReplyDeleteGood one, TS. But what are we to make of FWM's difficult-to-understand remark that police stations are gun-free zones?
DeletePrivate citizens are disarmed. Given the reports that we see all over about cops going bad, that's not cause for comfort.
